life trader, treasured stranger
a collection of more or less clean sketches I made while reading the Lilith's Brood trilogy by Octavia Butler. Drawing helps me visualise characters better, and also I was just having fun trying to come up with a consistent design for the Oankali. I have ...strongly mixed feelings about these books, (which I might explore in a second post) but I can't deny they were extremely engaging and well crafted.
i just got possessed and binged dawn in about 5 seconds so here's my take on the Oankali
the oankali would love playing the sims
"I began to seek out Humans. I avoided large parties of them, but it was easy to find individuals and small groups.
I followed them silently, dissected and enjoyed their scents, listened to their conversations. Sometimes they became aware that they were being followed, though they never saw me. My coloring had darkened and I hid easily in the shadows. The forest understory was usually wet or at least damp, and it was easy for me to move silently. The Humans I followed often made much more noise than I did. I watched a Human hunter make so much noise that the feeding peccary he was stalking heard him and ran away. The Human went to the place where the peccary had been feeding and he cursed and kicked the fruit the animal had been feeding on. It never occurred to him to eat the fruit or to collect some for his people. I ate some when he was gone."
- Octavia Butler, Imago, Exile, Chapter 5
The Oankali are so unserious. You mean to tell me you had 250 years to interview the last surviving humans individually and couldn’t identify 40 monsterfuckers who would be down to start a hybrid community with you?
Class assignment to create a representation of the Oankali aliens from Octavia Butler's Dawn. It's a very interesting book, I'd recommend it.
