idc what anyone says, monsters motivated by love are a thousand times scarier than any other kind. hive minds that subsume all life out of a genuine belief that everyone will be happier that way. aliens that subjugate humanity out of a colonizer mindset of “helping” a primitive species. things that mutate bodies and minds out of a desire to “fix” or “cure” them. undead creatures that want to spread the curse to their loved ones so they also never have to die.

monsters that treat their victims like scared family pets that don’t want their medicine. monsters that think they know best. monsters that wield the corrupting, devastating, horrifying power of love.

Red Hood: Year Two

So I wanted to try my hand at actually making full comic page start to finish just to learn the process of scripting, paneling, lettering, composition, colouring etc etc etc and I picked Red Hood because I thought gosh maybe I could put something out that's better than the whole lot of nothing he's been getting right now.

I learned a WHOLE lot about what goes into making a single page and also about what that process looks like for me personally. This, I pencilled digitally, traced to bristol, inked, scanned, and coloured digitally.

And the point of this page in particular was to try and craft a story that looks like it could feasibly take place alongside UTRH.

I will be using this project (which I've been affectionately referring to as Red Hood: Year Two) as an excuse to practice crafting more pages (of various subject matter), and hopefully make a little fancomic by the end of it.

This is one of my favorite pages of the second issue of Otherkin. I absolutely love how Victor split some bigger panels in two to underline how there are two key characters involved in the same scene. I'm also a huge fan of how we zoom out from the window. Oh, btw, Otherkin's Kickstarter campaign was successful, and we couldn't be happier about it! We get to keep working on this project at full speed! Back in 2023, a friend of mine (Victor Costa) and I were spending our vacations together, and we decided to make a short comic book. None of us had any experience with comic book creation (although I was already a writer, and he was already an illustrator).

What was supposed to be a fun two-week project turned into a three-month deep dive into everything, from script writing to lettering. The short story is flawed, but we are really proud of it, nevertheless. It also gave us the basic knowledge to start seriously studying comic book development and eventually creating our main series, Otherkin.

It's safe to say we are huge fans of Mike Mignola's work, especially Hellboy and B.P.R.D.. In addition, we were inspired by Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, and all things dark and eerie.
