Well I feel like to be precise it's probably a B+ depending on the dynamic? Overall I tend to be more of an enemies-to-lovers gal (or enemies to enemies with benefits, tbh) when it comes to fanfiction specifically, but I do love a good relationship arc that goes in reverse and then to the left and nobody really knows what's going on at this point.

I mean, I guess the deal is that I really like the piquant spice of betrayal and disappointment with a dash of hatred and anger that comes from said betrayal and disappointment and then the confusion of an emotion that's not clear or easily named one way or the other...

I like it when characters are emotionally confused, generally.

But I hold back from an A because it's not a thing I feel like I look for, when I'm tag browsing, so much as a thing I enjoy when I run into it in canons and when it comes up in (I feel like usually) AU fics.

Purple Crayon AU: would NHS be able to create a golden core for WWX if he loses his again? Like, do a portrait or sth of WWX with the visualisation of a golden core in his chest again? Because that'd be pretty neat. Even if it's a little core. Or even if it ends up being JWY instead of WWX who gets a save by NHS.

I mean, NHS would need to know about it to do something! He could probably draw a golden core, but someone knowledgable would still need to be around to put it into WWX, while portraits of WWX would probably be...bad ideas. Remember, just because he draws it doesn’t mean he controls what it does, other than by implication - he might draw a man-eating flower, but if the flower decides that it doesn’t like eating people, it’s gonna do whatever it likes.

20 for fun meta writer asks

Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

So I’m not currently writing much fanfic, but I am working on an original novel, working title Atharta Ascendant.  I’m going to copy-paste the couple paragraphs I wrote to a friend about it by way of introduction:

Atharta is one of the sole surviving members of the Haweyahs, an ethno-religious group targeted for genocide by the great imperial powers of the world for "heresy."  Orphaned as a baby during the sacking of the city of Yarikh, she is adopted into the Medjai, a semi-nomadic group of warriors and mercenaries who are brought in as sellswords during the siege.  When she reaches twenty years old, it is expected for her to go out on a Steel Pilgrimage, where she will earn her first money by "plying the trade."  Instead, for personal reasons, she sets out on a seemingly suicidal journey to the semi-mystical Haweyah city of Yerushayam, in full knowledge that it probably doesn't exist and getting there will take her through the territory of the very people who killed her parents and city in the first place.  The novel is more of a picaresque narrative, inspired by Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun quadrology.  It's less about Big Plot Things and just more about what happens to this young woman and who she meets along this journey, including but not limited to:

1) Anat, a self-professed immortal, atheist, rabble-rouser, and charlatan, who has a set of clerical robes for every empire's religion in her traveling bag at all times

2) Theophania, a Faliscan farmer on death-pilgrimage with her husbands and daughters, trying to get her grandfather's body to a city where his soul can be sent on to the afterlife (which is a real, physical place people have been to, and they've met the beings that live there, and if you don't stay in your lane the various august powers of the world have their clerics send you to the Bad Place instead)

3) Apatema, a minor Faliscan noblewoman with a lot of feelings about romantic love and sex, many of which she shares with Atharta

4) Apatema's cousin Demetrius, of more lineage but less happiness, betrayed by his lover Alexandros and in need of a Medjai to settle scores

5) Miranda, a young noblewoman sold into slavery for her father’s debts and rescued by Atharta from an illegal coliseum

6) Ryumon Kensei, a Ritsuryo bushi who feels they need to make amends for certain things they did in the attack on Yarikh 

So now that I’ve word-vomited all this at you, the meta stuff that I’m really excited about:

Atharta (and by extension the Haweyahs) are obviously Jews.  I’m not being subtle here.  Atharta’s physical journey is a reflection of the spiritual one faced by all modern Jews in the face of the diaspora - reconciling yourself with your origins in a world that is overwhelmingly not happy you’re alive.  I’m not Jewish by practice, but if the pogroms start again I’ll end up in the same mass grave as all of the other landsmen, and I’m excited to write a quintessentially Jewish story that will be perhaps more accessible to goyim.

The Faliscan Dominion is 100% the Roman Empire, but that’s okay.  I’m specifically writing this book to be 99k words or less so it’s more marketable, and that’s not enough space to build an entirely new culture with no real-world touchstones, to say nothing of *two.*  What I’m really excited about is Ritsu, the Japan-analogue.  In Ritsu, social class (warrior, priest, farmer, etc) is gender.  There is no relationship between gender and sex.  In *our* world, that is the real world, rigidly enforced gender roles began taking root in Japan in the early Yayoi period when Confucianism started being imported from Cao-Wei China, but in this world (which I haven’t thought of a name for yet, 70k words in; probably should get on that), there is no Confucianism, and if there is a fantasy-analogue of China, it’s not adjacent to Ritsu.  So.

None of the people in this world are white.  None.  If LotR can have no black people (not counting the Easterlings) and everyone can just shrug and say ‘whatever,’ my world can have no white people.  Anat, the immortal charlatan, has vitiligo, and it’s canonical that her depigmented skin is unlike any that Atharta has ever heard of or seen.  My petty hope is that if I ever make it big, ScarJo will have no roles she can play in the movie version without being canceled.

Atharta is an aromantic demisexual.  I’m not ace, but many of my friends (including so many of my mutuals on here, holler!) are, and I want to do right by them.  Aros and aces get so little rep; if I actually get this thing published, I want to be part of the solution,  not part of the problem.

Aziraphale has develops a mild fear of bathtubs with water. When Crowley visits Aziraphale's flat and finds there's no bath anymore, the demon _has_ to ask. Just painful hurty hurt of Aziraphale thinking "what if we hadn't swapped?" and having flashbacks to false memories of Crowley burning up in holy water. Essentially, Aziraphale has trauma and Crowley tries to make it better with cuddles and love.
