So happy that Barack Obama gets ANOTHER inauguration! Liz Goodwin from Yahoo! discusses his agenda and plans for the next four years.

Congratulations to President Barack Obama on his SECOND inauguration! I am so excited and proud to see his work for the next four years!

In an alternate reality, this would be Mitt Romney's first web presence as President-Elect. He prepared a transition site in preparation for victory, and it was live for a brief period of time before it was clear he'd lost the election. Big ups to Taegan Goddard for grabbing screenshots before the site was toast. source
Reactions to the election: Liberal edition
Jonathan Cohn “Romney and the Republicans had turned the election into a referendum on liberalism—not just the liberalism of Obama, but also the liberalism of Johnson and Kennedy, of Truman and Roosevelt...[They] challenged the philosophy behind such policies—the whole idea that governments should act to protect vulnerable groups and to guarantee economic security. It was a huge gambit. And it failed.” source
Greg Sargent "If Mitt Romney had won, he and his ideas (tax cuts, deregulation, unshackling the free market) might have been associated with the recovery, leaving Keynesianism and stimulus spending thoroughly discredited. Instead, Obama and Democrats will hopefully gain more credit for the ongoing recovery, and perhaps the idea that government can act to fix the economy will get rehabilitated." source
Ezra Klein “The bad news for Republicans isn’t what happened last night. It’s that it only gets worse from here. In 2016, we can expect the minority share of the electorate to rise by another two percentage points — and we can expect the economy to be in rather better shape...the reality is that the Republican Party has lost the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections, and it’s only going to get harder for them from here.” source
Michael Tomasky “[T[he Republican Party is just too far to the right. Not just to win a national election. It’s too far to the right even to compete really seriously in one. The thing some Republicans are saying now is absolutely true: They should have been able to win this year. No incumbent president has ever been reelected with this kind of unemployment rate, and there’s no good reason it should have happened now. They could have won.” source
Reactions to the election: Conservative edition
Sen. John Cornyn "[W]e have a period of reflection and recalibration ahead for the Republican Party. While some will want to blame one wing of the party over the other, the reality is candidates from all corners of our GOP lost tonight." source
Matt Lewis "It is the job of politicians and parties and movements to persuade Americans to buy into their vision. And they clearly aren’t buying what Republicans are selling. It’s time for the GOP to do some serious soul searching...The GOP shouldn’t abandon its core principles, but it’s time for some reinvention. An obvious place to start is with demographics. For example, as I have long advocated, Republicans simply must find a way to appeal to Hispanics." source
David Frum "Any idea that the immigration issue - and the immigration issue alone - would enable Republicans to staple a good chunk of the Latino vote to the conservative coalition - without changing anything else - is a dangerous self-deception...the crying need in the GOP is for a more middle-class orientation to politics, one that addresses concerns like healthcare as well as debts and deficits. But the ideas that dominated the past four years won't become more attractive if all conservatives do is translate them into Spanish." source
Erick Erickson "The GOP spent a ton of money through a bunch of organizations, including Super PACs, that was flat out wasted. The Newt Gingrich Super PAC was just a sign of things to come it seems...There must be a reckoning for how the GOP does business with groups that fundraise off the names of politicians and use all the money for overhead that includes luxurious travel and hotels." source
Break On Through (To The Other Side)
An artifact, post-presidential election, USA, 2012 AD:
I admit, I’m wearing my “To Hell With Them” attitude today. If the majority want socialism, let them have it. In the meantime, hubs & I have decided to double down on our family preparedness & networking…we’re starting grassroots, from the bottom up. Let the bureaucracy take care of its minions - my work will be at the face to face level. People who are suffering are going to suffer much worse before this is over…and their Hero Zero is NOT going to be there for them. So all you losers with the 30 Obamaphones, you’re gonna have to sell them for food because starting today, I’m bringing my canned goods to families I know, and church distributors I know…and I’ll be taking care of my OWN. No more handing over donations to nameless/faceless boxes and big organizations and just hoping a little bit makes its way past the bureaucratic skimming, to someone who really needs the help.
It’s also time to form tighter units within our community of truly like-minded folks. Instead of going to a movie or shopping at the mall, we’re organizing skill-sharing afternoons…everything from food storage to solar cooking to trauma first aid kits. And outings to the shooting range :) Next time we have a big storm, I hope all you O-bots remember your smoke signal training, cuz you’re not using MY emergency gear, and you’re not eating MY hot stew cooked over MY solar dish. And you better come packin’, cuz while you may be stealing from me via your regime, you’re gonna have to take my rice-n-beans by force. A lot of force. Bring it, you pansies. THERE IS NO FREE RIDE.
Cold? Yes. But if it’s the difference between saving a son/daughter of the republic or saving a socialist, I’ve made my choice. (And don’t think I’ll forget who had those blue signs in their yards…not for a minute.)
Pardon the onslaught of Obama/election posts tonight. I'm just really fucking happy :)
