ukrainian fashion week: obrani
perhaps obrani only meant to conjure fall with their apple-strewn runway at the a/w 2011 ukrainian fashion week in kiev, but given the slightly suggestive nature embedded in the nubile youthful aesthetic they went for, it seemed rather to evoke fertility instead.
the label, which was created by friends and former models (forgive me if some facts are skewed--i'm working from a poor translation) helen reva and elena maistrenko, gets its name from a ukrainian word which translates to mean "elected" and has been going strong, growing in popularity these past few seasons.
the fall show had a light, girlish touch that occasionally, as i mentioned earlier, alight on something more provocative, with the soft, flippy dresses cut in diaphanous (and sometimes sheer) fabrics often accented by cutouts or drapes to add interest. the focus was clearly on dresses, although little coats (or perhaps robes) were quite charming, as well, and the occasional piece of swimwear cropped up, such as that worn by rising ukrainian star evelina mambetova (second from top).
the colour palette was soft as the motifs, with peach, ochre, white, cream, lemon, ballerina pink, and navy the predominant shades. dresses came in various lengths--mini, midi, and to the ankle or beyond, and in as many silhouettes. sometimes in a sixties shift-like cut, we also saw more complex draped varieties, and an impressive mermaid number to close. the show had all the appeal girls will be seeking this fall, with just a touch of mischief to add to the romanticism.
