Why is Soriel just so good?
Okay, I’m really going to delve deep into this question. It’s time I make my official stand on why I love this ship so much.
[[MORE]] What makes Soriel such a good ship can be broken down into several points. How they look together, how they act together, how they helped each other, and how they can continue to help each other.
This first part deals with height differences which is a liiiittle subjective. ... okay it’s very subjective. Not everyone loves height difference ships, especially when the guy is shorter. But I personally love these ships. I’ve seen in real life couples with the guy being shorter and I really don’t see why some people object to it. Now, I don’t fawn over these real life examples I’ve seen because it’s a) rude, and b) not a big deal. But in a fictional ship I just adore it!
Next part of this point is the whole “lady and the Tramp” or “high class falling for low class” dynamic. We have a former queen, who shook off that role for her own moral convictions and a guy who just gave up. Let’s face it. We love this as a society. It’s been a part of the stories I’ve heard since I was little, it’s in our songs, and we also see it happen in the world.
The end of the pacifist route is just packed with this. How they talk to each other, the texts, and how they just seem so happy being together. Romantic or not you cannot deny their friendship.
Beyond that? You have the anniversary Q&A on the official blog which was confirmed as canon last I checked. So, Toriel buys the bro’s groceries, packs lunches for Papyrus, drinks in front of Sans, and makes the cutest grin when talking about Sans’ goblin-like eating habits. :3c
DeltaRune is a different can of worms. They don’t fully know each other, but I figure when they met it went well enough since Toriel told him about how she had to hide chocolates from her kid. Just not sure that’s something I’d be telling some random person I didn’t start to form a friendship with. So, while he might not have “befriended” her, he very well might have befriended her.
How they helped each other:
Sans… nihilistic. He had little reason to do anything anymore. No matter how you head canon his understanding of resets (actual remembering, being aware, or just the reports) he has found little reason to try. Why bother when it will all be undone? Then, one day, he’s telling knock knock jokes to no one at this giant door and this woman responds. And she laughs. She genuinely laughs at a literal bad joke. She invited him to come back the next day, then again, and again. Someone who stopped caring and he was going out every day to tell her jokes. He starts collecting socks, bakes a pie, and buys snail shell pasta for some unknown reason but considering Toriel loves snail one could only wonder if that has anything to do with it. Basically, he tries caring again.
Toriel… right or wrong, it’s up for the individual player to decide. But seeing her people cry out for the blood of humans, after losing her adopted human child and her son caused her to turn her back on them. She sought isolation and tried to keep any human who fell safe. She took care of them. Got them new shoes and clothes as they grew. But, like most young things, they eventually want to see what else the world has to offer… The Ruins is just too small for a human. Over time she learns each one has died and their soul is taken by her ex husband. Hurt and seeing how pointless her efforts are again and again, her self esteem drops. She cannot save even one child… Then, one day, someone knocks on the Ruin door and she replies. The joke this other monster told isn’t good, but it is her style of jokes, silly puns, and she laughs. She hadn’t laughed like this since… well, she cannot remember when, but that does not matter. This monster tells more jokes, and she laughs again, and again. Then she tells her own and she hears his laughter. She knows he must have a life to get to but dares to ask him to come back. He does. Again and again, night after night. They tell jokes until he has to go give his brother, who he says is named Papyrus, his bedtime story. (Such a caring brother) Jokes now fill her journal as the time at the door breaks up the monotony that is her self isolation. Then, one day was just… it was hard. Perhaps it was a picture, a dream, the thought of hearing children laughing… or maybe just seeing the empty children’s room. It hurt. Still, she goes to the door for joke night and tries acting like all was fine. He noticed, though. He knew something was wrong and asked. She shouldn’t but she asks him to make a promise. What monster would agree to it though. They all want freedom and one more soul is all they needed. Tears poured down her face, knowing it was a hopeless bid as he had no reason to agree to the promise. But… then he did. Showing her not all monsters were like the ones she walked away from all those years ago.
How they can continue to help each other:
This is all speculation, but we can guess they would continue telling each other jokes. We know they hang out together thanks to the Q&A, so their friendship would continue to bloom. Toriel keeps Sans trying and Sans helps her keep her humor.
Toriel teaches Sans how to bake and Sans watches after Frisk when she is busy with school matters.
There is more potential, but it really is up to the person to decide.
And those are the main points I feel like going over now. I really could go on. For example, I personally love that this ship, as I see it, is a slow building one. Both don’t seem the type to rush into the relationship, thus giving shippers a lot to work with and also cute awkward moments.
With that all said, that is why Soriel is such a great ship!
