Oc-tober day 5: at sunset

This one is the one I've worked the longest on (boy have I learned things about making color swatches), but I'm really proud of it! also figured out what my main brushes are now that I'm drawing digitally more.

This is the Fate Trio (Mara in green, Esra in yellow, and Martin in navy blue) in different universes, all having the same conversation. lore under the cut!

Here's the quick run down if you haven't read the Mara lore doc: Mara and Martin are siblings and don't have the best relationship, especially with mounting pressure on Martin to be a superhero and Mara getting overlooked due to this fact. Later in life, Mara and Esra become a couple and are engaged, before Esra gets caught in the crossfire of a bank robbery gone wrong (Martin was also there as a superhero trying to save everyone. Mara blames him for Esra's death).

So that's the point where the timeline branches. I've talked a lot with my roommate about how in every universe, one of the three in the Fate trio has to die or else nobody has character growth (hence the name fate trio).

The top sunset is the canon timeline. Mara and Martin visit Esra's grave, and there is high tension between the siblings as shown by how far apart they sit. This is before Mara becomes a fully fledged villain.

The middle sunset is a world where Martin died instead. Mara and Esra stay together, but Mara has many regrets about her relationship with Martin. (Notably, Martin's character has both a hero complex and a martyr complex. There are many possibilities for his death).

The bottom sunset is a world where Mara dies. Her death would bring Esra and Martin together in their shared grief, and they'd become friends. I'd like to think they're reminiscing on the good times in this image.

Is there a world where everyone survives? Maybe. But I don't think it'd be the best world, as all the relationships wouldn't improve. Mara and Martin would never reconcile, as Mara continues drifting away from him. Esra and Martin would never have become friends, because Esra would be on Mara's side in the sibling beef (and even if Esra became friends with Martin, Mara would take it as a betrayal). Esra and Mara would be pretty happy though, finally getting the chance to be married. There would be lots of ups and downs, but eventually I'd all work out.
