I think it might be the only way forward for us to continue a civilised correspondence. I would not be so hasty in your assumption I might abandon you the more I get to know you; on the contrary, please be assured that your latest missive only soothes me further, that we have more in common than you think.For instance, a mother's well-meaning (for the most part) but altogether misplaced encouragement. My own mother has not yet given up on her pursuit of my 'happiness'; I am unconvinced that matrimony provides this but she remains quite resolved in her delusions. I did at one time attempt to humour her, however — I fear it only served to embarrass myself and the unfortunate young woman she had selected to participate in her scheming. I envy that your mother appears to have ceased her efforts, though I disagree with the reasoning. At thirty years of age, I think I had only just begun to know myself; even now, I find I am not the same person I was five years ago. How might we enter into lifelong arrangements with another person if we do not even know yet our own minds? Preposterous, if you ask me. You mention that your mother may 'turn her attentions elsewhere' — do you worry after younger siblings? My mother has no one else to focus upon. I was an only child, and therefore I believe I am, in some ways at least, still regarded as such; a child.
