From out of nowhere to KFAM [the chronicles of KFAM]
Being Kfam Chair wasn't actually my first plan, I was really unsure of what I wanted to do in Circle K at the time, but many things happened to me through the months I was in Circle K. I was inspired by JCao’s speech during DCON, his story really touched base with what I wanted to do in Circle K. I’ll also admit... I cried like a baby, but only on the inside because as a man I cannot cry externally, maybe a little. There was also my Circle K mum, Jennifer Que, the KFAM chair before me; she’s the reason that I ended up staying in Circle K. When I went to events she really made me feel welcomed, and it’s really something I never experienced from a club.
If I had to say why I became interested in KFAM it would be because I saw the way my mum was doing her job as KFAM, and it was always very inspiring to me to see the work she did. My train of thought at the time was more on the lines of “Mother looks to be having fun as Kfam,” and I also wanted to have an experience like that! I did realize that if I was going to become the KFAM chair it would mean taking up after Jennifer Que, and it would be difficult to be as great as she was as Kfam. However, I admit I was excited at the thought of the challenge before me! One of the things I definitely wanted to focus on this year were the SLPs, because I’d like to be as close to them as our Kiwanis.
As someone who was fairly new to the KFAM I had trouble learning what my responsibilities were, and I mean learning as in what to do and how to do it. I wasn't completely sure what the duties were for my position. It couldn't all be learned from a “book” or through training sessions, although they helped, it mostly came from learning experiences. Although I was never really doing it alone.
That being said my success thus far could never have been just me, I have very supportive board and general members that help me immensely. They are always eager to help me when I need people to come out to KFam events, and they never hesitate to ask if I need help. It’s nice knowing that I have friends to rely on, and sometimes it feels as if I have a lot of co chairs [kind of like a little family] and that’s really what keeps me going.
The most recent success for our KFAM would be the tabletop service event that we hosted at our local Costa Mesa Kiwanis’ Meeting. The project was to make paper cranes working up to having 1000 of them. It’s said that if you make 1000 cranes you can have a wish, and with our endeavors we wish to bring hope to those with certain medical conditions. Our immediate past president Ryan Pham was the one who first came up with the event to make cranes for his mother. Since then we have done numerous crane folding events for many people, and we wished to share the experience with our Costa Mesa Kiwanis.
What I love the most about KFAM is having the chance to build relationships between people through the many different Kfam events we have throughout the year. HOWEVER! What I hate the most would be the huge amounts of CERFs I have to do every month!
