It’s sudden and painful. And for a moment, Mason has no idea what the hell happened. Not until the man, one who he has never seen before is pulling back, blood on his hands. Blood Mason quickly realizes belongs to him.
It’s like as soon as the realization hits, the pain hits as well. With a gasp, he’s falling to his knees, hands scrambling to covering the wound in his side. His mind is fuzzy...things aren’t quite flowing the way they should, but he’s sure it’s bad. Really bad. Much worse than anything he’s ever suffered before.
Things go hazy and time warps for a while after that. He’s not sure how long. Just knows that somewhere in the distance, someone is shouting. The world isn’t brought back into startling focus until someone is pressing hard against his side. He resurfaces with a shout of pain. And though distantly, that someone is trying to help him, all he wants is them to stop touching, stop pressing because it really fucking hurts.
Things fade again, thought Mason isn’t sure how long. Just knows that when he comes back to awareness, he’s moving and he has no idea why or where he’s going. Instead of trying to figure it out he let’s the darkness creep back in and fades away.
Information is sketchy at best and Ainsley has no idea what the fuck is going on. Just that her mother called her freaking out about Mason. Her heart stops in the moment Olivia tells her that Mason’s in the hospital. That she needs to get down there now.
There are a great many things about her family Ainsley doesn’t love. But her brother? She would never ever knowingly abandon her brother in his time of need. Even if she has no idea what’s happening to him.
It’s at the hospital that she gets the full story. Or as much of the story as she can pull from her crying mother. It’s not enough. Not by a long shot, but it’ll have to suffice until a doctor or nurse or somebody comes to tell them what’s going on.
It’s not until she’s dropping into the chair beside her mother, that she realizes Liana’s not there. And it pisses her off. There is no way her brother’s wife doesn’t know he’s there. Doesn’t know that he’s probably fighting for his life somewhere in that hospital. And yet she’s not there.
With a soft excuse to her mom, she’s stepping outside to call her sister-in-law. Three calls go unanswered before she finally leaves a message. “What the fuck, Li? He’s fighting for his fucking life and you’re not here?” She can hear her own ragged breathing, her own tears over the line.
Ainsley dials the phone again and again - unsure how many times - before finally admitted defeat and heading back into the hospital. Calling Liana will have to wait until later.
