Odetta and Eddie are in love.

Roland sees this immediately. Some buried part is even jealous. The rest of him is dying by inches—the penicillin wasn't enough. He can't let his guard down. Both men know of Odetta's dark half, Detta, even though she's unaware herself.

The third door beckons, but he's too weak. Eddie takes Odetta and they race away up the beach, Eddie promising to come back for him with Odetta's wheelchair.

Death, but not for you. Roland closes his eyes.

All he can do is put his trust in Eddie, and will of Gan.

she is described to have an "alternate personality", detta walker, who is unknown to odetta and was brought on by head trauma at a young age. detta suppresses odetta for most of the story, however odetta does return :]
