why did your tribute volunteer? Amp has an incredibly inflated sense of self, but is also bullied by her peers for being an overachiever and for her abnormal compulsions. The day before the reaping is a particularly bad day for her at school, where she had been tormented incessantly by classmates, bit back harshly at them, and was punished. She couldn’t sleep that night, coming to the reaping completely out of focus (very out of character for a girl who is normally 100% put together and incising) and, with her thoughts muddled and swirling with thoughts of how she was going to prove herself to her peers and show them, show them all what she was capable of, she shouts out when the escort calls for volunteers. She immediately regrets it, but won’t show that to anyone, keeping her panic inside.

The Shapiro family had always been poor. For generations, even back before the War and the Dark Days, the Shapiros always held the grunt work at the bottom of the totem pole. Ignus and Fara, two lowly power plant workers, were ok with that, only worrying about love and family. As long as they could support their three children, Ampere, Henry, and Joule, they were happy with being a family that stayed close even in trying times. That was, until a 6-year-old Ampere fell into a dark puddle in their backyard.
While Amp was crying about ruining her favorite dress, Ignus was out examining their property, and came to realize that his daughter had stumbled upon oil. And though in these times Panem was not in much need of oil anymore, it had become a scarce and valuable resource nonetheless. Upon further inspection of their home, District Five officials bought out the property for more money than the Shapiros would ever know what to do with, and suddenly a family that had barely scraped by for years was wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. With their new wealth and titles, the Shapiro family became powerful new money in District Five. Ignus and Fara quickly worked their ways up in the ranks of the power plants until they were tag-team leading the force of one of the largest plants in the district. The family moved into a large, comfortable house and gave their children the best education and resources money could buy.
Ampere was the only child out of the three who remembered what it was like to live in poverty. And while her parents had been ok with it, even as a young child she felt cheated out of the opportunities that the other children at school had. When her family came upon the sudden surge of wealth, she knew that she could never go back to living in squalor. So, growing up, she made it her job to be the best at everything, to succeed where her parents had failed. Bossy and demanding, her devotion to being always on top made her less than popular among her peers and subject to rampant tormenting and bullying. Knowing that the only way to get to the top was to gain the respect of her peers, Amp drove herself to the brink of insanity trying to fit in. Obsessed with perfection and keeping control of everything around her, Ampere developed dozens of nervous habits, from washing her hands for extraordinary amounts of time to scratching her arms uncontrollably to blinking in odd rhythms.
Fara had given birth to Ampere at the age of sixteen, and though she was devoted beyond belief to her oldest child, she had always been somewhat clueless about the mental care and wellbeing of children. When Amp began showing odd signs and tics, she shrugged it off for several years, believing her daughter to simply be quirky and a little different. That was ok. Besides, Fara and Ignus had many more important issues to attend to at the power plant. It was only when the children’s nanny suggested a visit to a doctor that she realized something was legitimately wrong with her little girl.
Ampere was diagnosed with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder at age thirteen. And with medication, Ampere worked on letting go of the obsession, but still held on to the need to stay on top, to be the best.
