Talk at me about the decapitation thing. Is it a specific ID'd deity? part of Deerpocalypse or not? And what's with Freyr here, did I miss something big in the lore or are things just weird. And why do I keep associating this with Mimir's Well? Does that even make sense?
OK, decapitation is a Cernunnos thing - there are a couple of different sources not too hard to track down in this - on my phone, but ping me tomorrow if you have trouble.
Mimir’s well … first of all obviously it’s Odin, and it’s an Odin story that specifically evokes the Hunt (which Odin leads) (but others have led) (but) *takes breaths* and thereby ties back to Cernunnos. Because it’s about that restless relentless more-seeking, that dangerous, go-out-and-get-the-new-thing, nix on settling for what you’ve got, do something drastic to level up sharply Thing. (The difference between hunting and farming/raising is the difference between deer and cattle. See wealth creation vs just wealth. Which is also exactly what Cernunnos is about — all of that Hunt stuff came for me out of that really good article.)
This is why I currently have a lot of questions about Odin and Cernunnos and my personal deerpocalypse. I’m pretty sure Odin is prominent/dominant but I’m not sure if Cernunnos is involved as well, like actually involved per se (and if so, what exactly are the intended roles here) or if it’s a highly specific reference party Odin is throwing me (see: 57 varieties of syncretism — I am a hard polytheist, but also think that They can really get into inter-pantheon resonances in various ways, and that They grow and change, sometimes in ways inflected by people’s associations and conflations, and possibly also that They may decide to draw from far enough back in time that the resulting aspect can approach archetype-ish-ness, see also: Freyr, query).
There I just explained that on my fucking phone. I hate typing on this thing. My syntax is tortured enough when I can see and edit properly.
