The weather was nice, so David had decided to let the family go outside for the day, and they were sitting in a circle on the grass. Star was playing Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind on her guitar, and everyone was singing along, swaying and leaning against each other, smiling. They were sitting on the front lawn, most of them high on the blue stuff, not caring who was watching. David sang softly, just enjoying the feeling of their peace and love washing over him like a cool breeze. “The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind, the answer is blowin' in the wind.”

“Daddy, someone’s taking photos,” Pookie said, and Star stopped playing. Everyone fell silent, and turned to stare at the stranger, who was standing on the edge of the lawn with a camera. No one moved from the circle, but David sensed their hostility, their protectiveness, and he raised his hands a little to stop any of them from reacting. “It’s okay, ” he said. “Daddy’s got this. Everyone stay here.” He sent out a mental wave of peace, to keep them docile, and stood up.

He walked over to the stranger, taking deep, slow, breaths, to keep himself calm. She’s not working for D3. They wouldn’t be stupid enough to do something like this. Maybe she’s a journalist? He reached the stranger, and smiled brightly. “Hello, can I help you?” he asked, in a friendly, open, tone, giving none of his annoyance away.

“Oh, no. Tim,” Edward said, adjusting the glasses on his face. “You do a lot more than that. You’re almost better at hacking than I am. Almost.” He told the other, hoping he’d take it as a compliment and not as a challenge. He wasn’t about to say he was second best at anything. Certainly not hacking, which he felt he was extremely good at. He sipped at his coffee, sitting across from the other.
