I’m offended by you telling me what I should be offended by.
I’m tired of seeing the misrepresentations of the televised few.
Deciding the mass perceptions of the foreign hue.
I choose the word foreign because in our own land we are not accepted.
We are told to walk when others can crawl.
We are told to jump when others can reach.
We are told to fly when others can be.
You see I’m offended by you telling me what I should be.
I am told I should play sports but not become an athlete.
I am told I should become a rapper but not an artist.
I am told I can make t-shirts but not be a designer.
I am told I can be black but not American.
From the tender age of carefree I’m taught that I am different.
And it isn’t until the age of wonder that I discover.
That I am offended by you being scared.
Scared that I might make a mistake I haven’t made yet.
Scared that I might take something that I haven’t earned yet.
Scared that I might steal away into your hearts and influence your mind.
Scared that I might step outside of my lane and say something outlandish and so crazy like, He is the black version of me.
We are all 50 shades of God or Allah who coincidentally are one in the same.
I’m offended by me not being allowed to be offended.
Kanye said Niggas in Paris now I am everybody’s nigga.
Even though my parents flew to this country and I go through the same problems as you, we are not equal.
I am black to them but African to you.
Oh I remember I can apply for African American scholarships because it’s easier.
I can act ghetto, be a slave, be rescued, be everything except the hero in any story.
And when those hero tales are told they are thrown to the side like the rising tide against the sands of hope.
Clawing it’s way for a feeling of freedom.
Free from the chains of despair.
It's clear that my path is predetermined but not predestined.
I spoke with the man across the room and he told me to be whom ever I choose.
So if I decide to skip the snooze button because I've raced out the door before the clock strikes four and I'm hustling, bustling, to be something, anything, and not nothing.
If I decide to play the game which is laid out in front of me and I decide to use the playbook filled with defensive schemes and offensive dreams.
Please don't be offended by my OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOUR.
