This... might be a bit of an undertaking. Oh boy. Ooooooh boy.

How I feel about this character

-takes a deep breath-

It is not an exaggeration to say that Qrow Branwen is one of my favourite characters in the history of media. He is smart and he is kind and he is soft and sweet. He was built up to be this big tough guy and he shows up and he’s a dork. The show spends so much time showing us that from the outside, Qrow is the classic renegade, bullshitting, womanizing tool. And then. And then. AND THEN.

Then they take it all and go “actually no. He’s a terrified, hopeless fool, who hates himself, who drinks from trauma, and who is so scared of losing the people he loves that he will destroy himself to save them”.

They take his alcoholism and they make it a story of trauma and self-harm. They take his womanizing and show us that he flirts because he can’t form permanent connections. They take his need to protect and show him getting hurt over and over and over again until he breaks trying to hold up the world.

Qrow Branwen is a broken, sad man, and it’s only at the end of V6 that he starts to come out of it. He’s lost everything he thought he ever had. And he’s given up. And then his niece stares him down and says “You are worthy. You are kind. You are important. And I love you. Now help me.” And he does.

He puts down the alcohol. He picks up his sword. He tries his best to help the girls. He uses everything he has and it works.

Qrow Branwen was absolutely shattered at the start of V6. And Ruby said “fuck that”, picked up his pieces, put them in her hood, and handed them back to him one at a time until he took the rest himself.

He deserves the world. He deserves to be loved. He deserves everything.

He’s so not what you’d expect and that’s part of what makes him amazing.

And like... Qrow’s fighting style is something so unique to his character as well? In V3, Qrow fights like Winter. He doesn’t fight like him. He’s drunk and belligerent and mocking and he fights like Winter.

When he goes up against Tyrian in V4? With others beyond that? He’s a dance battler. A ballet battler. He’s sweeping and majestic and incredibly poised and artful. He fights like Weiss sans Dust, and you know Winter would comment on that.

When he fights Winter in V3, he doesn’t just mimic her fighting style at the start. He mimics it the whole way through the fight. He is mocking her fighting style by proving he can fight her on even ground in a style he doesn’t use at all. And to me, that’s the biggest reason why he wins that fight. Because he was doing everything to put himself at a disadvantage.

And he still didn’t drop the scythe.

I mean, Qrow’s softness is something that continues on throughout the whole series. His eyes get softer in V4, with the new models. His voice shifts to softer (especially in V7 trailer, thank you Jason). He is brilliant and wonderful and I adore him.

Qrow could have been the macho, manly, womanizing, bullshit fuckery character of RWBY and nobody would have questioned it.

But he’s not.

He was, and is, Monty’s OC. Monty’s self-insert. And making him a hard working soft man who cares so much it hurts is precisely who Monty presented himself to be. And precisely who Qrow is.

And I think that’s the greatest tribute CRWBY has ever done to Monty. Getting Qrow right.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

James/Qrow is my OTP. My ultimate soft OTP and I am so SOFT for them. Established or not, pining or knowing, hate to love or friends to lovers. Every trope. Every situation. Every way is perfect.

James and Qrow give me such strong feelings that I’ve never had for a ship before and it kills me that they’ve only interacted in V3. V7 is bringing me such hope for them and I hope everything I thought about them (non-romantically, obvs) is true. And if they end up canon, fuck man, I’ll fly down to Austin and suck Kerry Shawcross’ dick myself.

But I don’t ship them for the canon. I ship them for the feels. Two older, broken men who put the world on the shoulders, loving each other when they can’t love themselves.

Kiersten White, one of my favourite authors, has a quote that I will apply to them forever.

“And I’d choose you; in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality, I’d find you and I’d choose you.” 

And I’m so glad I have that quote for these boys.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Qrow and Ruby’s relationship, as well as Qrow and Tai’s, is so important to me.

Qrow and Ruby’s relationship as gotten a lot of development over the series and that’s important to me. Ruby pulls Qrow out of the darkness. Qrow pulls Ruby forward. He gives her drive. She gives him a reason to try. The two have such a great back and forth and they love each other so much.

Like, Qrow’s poisoning, Ruby’s faith, Ruby’s defending, and then the girls defending Ruby against Qrow in V6 and him being SHOCKED because even if he’s angry and confused he trusts Ruby. and that trust breaks during the Apathy and he starts to think she’s failing because he’s failing. And if he trained her, she’s doomed to die.

But she’s not. She’s so much more than his broken, terrified expectations and it is because of that that she pulls him out of the darkness and gives him a life again. She breathes life back into Qrow and that’s so important.

They have such a beautiful, wonderful, familial relationship, and the fact that they aren’t blood related makes it so, so much more powerful, especially as someone who has a strong relationship with their step mother. I’m not blood related to her, but she’s mine. And Ruby has that same relationship with Qrow.

Chibi shows Qrow and Tai as an old married couple and I am inclined to agree. I think, when they don’t hate each other, they rely on each other. They’re all the other has left of their team. Tai has friends, so does Qrow, but I imagine they saw each other more. We know, from the show and the comics, that Qrow was around a lot when the girls were kids. It’s interesting to think of that dynamic.

How much does Tai know about Oz’s stuff? How much about Qrow’s?

I think he knows most things. About silver eyes. About the shapeshifting. About all of it. But he chose to walk away because he can’t save the world, but he can save his little part of it, and make a home for one of the people trying.

Tai isn’t a coward. Tai didn’t give up. Tai is helping the way he knows how. And if making a home for Qrow, broken and bastardly as he is, helps save the world, then he will leave the window open, even in the middle of winter.

And they’ve not interacted much in canon, but that’s such a feeling I get from the two of them. And I think it’s pretty accurate.

My unpopular opinion about this character

I am so fucking terrified V7 is gonna ship him with Winter. I don’t want it. It’s the most bullshit, heterosexual ship in the entire show and it goes against literally everything RWBY stands for in terms of romantic development.

But I think both VAs ship it.

Don’t do it CRWBY. Don’t do it.

Also according to the Youtube comments: fuck Vic McNuggets. Qrow’s new VA, Jason, is better in every conceivable way.

ALSO ALSO: He’s gay. He gives off such queer vibes and he’s gay. He flirts because it was a product of being voiced by McMayo.

Also also also: He’s not Ruby’s father can that part of fndm shut the fuck up. Literally even cRWBY hates it and you’re missing the entire point of the series and RT media as a whole.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

In a perfect world, James and Qrow would be married. But I’m a shipper, I know how to write ships that will never exist. I do it all the time.

I guess there’s a lot of things I want to see:

I want to see how he became a bird.

I want to see the first time his semblance hurt someone.

I want to see the time with Ruby when they were building her scythe and training her. She gets her weapon from Qrow. I want to know how they built it together.

I want to see his time at Signal as a teacher. I am dead certain Ozpin or Taiyang got him that job. Show me CRWBY.

I want the STRQ show, tbh. I wanna know everything.

How I feel about this character: I freaking love Yang, before the fall of beacon I loved her for being there for her teammates and her friendship with Blake. After the fall of Beacon I was so happy to watch her recovery and her reuniting with her sister and teammates.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Blake and Neo that's about it for active shipping, I've deff read fics with other ships that were pretty cute though. 

My non-romantic OTP for this character: I've always wanted her and Nora to interact more, also Weiss.

My unpopular opinion about this character:...I don’t really think I have one? 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: okay this is mostly ‘cause of how @lacependragon writes them interaction in their fics but I really want Yang and Ironwood to talk, he sent Yang her arm personally and I really just want to see a conversation at least about that.
