“it’s admittedly shaky at best, cause some days... I’m not so sure.” Lance gestured with his hand, shaking it in a ‘so-so’ gesture.
‘ but… i have to smile. and i feel angry. but I want to love. and i’m hurt, but there’s hope. what is this? ‘
The older Davenport rose an eyebrow, he had never heard Kenzie talk like that, maybe she was watching too much Netflix. “Please tell me you’re quoting some sappy romcom or worse, Val. Is it Shakespeare? That one guy Oscar?”
‘ you’re gonna get yourself killed. ‘
“That’d be the point, besides... Char would avenge me.”
‘ i know i’m brilliant. ‘
Laughter erupted from him, blue eyes squeezing shut in mirth. “Don’t let anyone lie to you, you’re brilliant on the third Tuesday of every month. Which, funny enough, is not today.”
‘ oh, so you do listen to me. ‘
He paused, considering joking with her and lying and teasing her as he always did. This time it was different. “Yeah Kenz. I do. More than you think I do. I’m an ass, but I’m your older brother. I love you even on your worse days. Even when you deserve a mean hook to that mouth of yours.” He reached to her face squeezing her cheeks gently, which she swiped at immediately. “I always listen, especially to you.”
‘ don’t do anything that stupid again. ‘
Blood pooled just below him, something hurt, and badly in his ribs. He’d probably broken one of them... Coach was going to kill him if he was out of commission.
His bruised features rose up to not see Val, but Mackenzie, her features contorted in worry as she helped him stand up. Lance didn’t need to turn around to know what was going on behind him. Kenzie was not alone from the running motorcycle with the lights running still. His sister was quick to move underneath his arm and help him stand. Curiosity got the better of him, and he turned to see Charlotte just as she smashed a well placed elbow into the bloke’s face. A small crunch echoed around them, and the poor sod and his small crew were all groaning and moaning on the floor around her.
