i've seen people trying to make sense of stede and how his personality shifted in s2ep7…but it makes completely sense to me. it’s what ed went through in the first three episodes! ed felt unlovable, so he pretended to be the person everyone assumed he was or wanted him to be. a ruthless pirate without an ounce of empathy. he can’t make sense of himself. there is this pirate inside of him but it can’t reconcile with the person he is and wants to become.

now when we look at stede in s2ep6 and s2ep7…we can assume that he feels loved, cause ed is back with him and the crew became a family again and celebrates him! but is he only celebrated when he is a bloodthirsty pirate? is he good enough to even be there? all these thoughts seem to plague him. stede thinks he needs to be a better captain. that starts again in season 2 with the conversation he and ed had, with his tone and how he should be tougher with his crew. zhang saying he is weak and soft. then the training with izzy. he’s only allowed love when he achieves the goal of becoming that person. then ned brings everything subconscious that's been bubbling up inside stede back to the surface. afterwards stede is cheered on by everyone after he actually killed the man! and one flaw stede actually has is that he can be quite self-centered! all of this plays together.

so why is ed allowed to make mistakes and have an identity crisis but stede isn’t? i think they’re close to figuring out what they want not only from each other but from themselves. they balance each other out in more ways than they think and above all…they’re loved and lovable.

I understand why a lot of people don't like how Stede dresses in season 2. l've been thinking about it quite a bit recently, wondering why I don't feel the same way, and l've realised it's because I don't believe he will stick to the pirate/traditionally masculine clothing. We see in S1 that Stede adores his clothes but we also know that in his life prior to piracy he wouldn't have had much choice in how he dressed. He actively chose clothes that pushed right against the boundaries society placed on him, but he still had to follow dress codes. We watch him moving further away from these restrictive rules as S1 progresses. He wears more colour, has a few outfits that are completely outside his usual clothes, such as his theatre outfit and his explorer ensemble, but he still continues to wear clothing that is more or less what would have been expected of him in that era. When he gives his wealth away to Mary he sheds the last of his old life. His clothes were a uniform, and now he's graduated and wants to go a little wild. He's every kid who was forced to wear a blazer in school. He might like the colour, and the fit, but it's still a reminder of when he was beholden to rules that were suffocating him. So he ran to the opposite end of the spectrum. He wants to wear rough and ready clothes, with open collars and rolled up sleeves to show the skin he's always had to keep covered. He wants to feel like a real pirate, like he's truly left his old life behind. I'll be shocked if, in S3, we only see him in the same clothes as S2. I think we'll see him realise he doesn't need to follow the rules of pirate clothes - the same way he doesn't need to follow the rules of his previous life. He'll start to wear what he truly enjoys seeing himself in. Outfits that fall between the fineries of before and the practicality of pirate wear. The colours will come back, the frills too, but his shoes might be leather boots, to make walking on deck easier, his coats will be for protection against the weather, not just to match his breeches. I think we've yet to see exactly who Stede is, and I'm so excited to follow him on his journey.

I could stare at this for hours. Could watch this scene for hours. Everything about it...

The way he punches Izzy with so much behind it, the pain in his eyes, the desperation in his voice. The way he gives everything up in hopes that it will save Stede. The way he puts himself between Stede and the guns, shielding him, making it so they have to go through him to hurt Stede. The way he pulls off the blindfold. The way they look into eachothers eyes, both realizing that everything might be okay, that they have eachother. They are so in love and you can see it in every aspect of this scene.

just had a random thought i wanted to share…but anyone else want stedes petrified orange to make a comeback? i know it won’t happen in the finale or probably ever, but i can see a scene where he gets it stolen or loses it and just panics! yes, he’s an absent father but, goddamn he still loves his kids! he’d be furious and would want to get that orange back because of his daughter! he’s still a dad and we see that in his character but i wish there were more direct mentions.

the writing in these new ofmd episodes make SENSE! look at stede bonnet in season one, trying to become an infamous pirate and edward teach trying to get rid of the role of BEING an infamous pirate. they both helped each other with that and now that they reached their goals…they don’t think they’re on the same wavelength anymore! of course! their goals were completely different! what they don’t know is what they really are or want themselves yet. (especially stede who hadn’t time to figure himself out completely because he was so invested in helping ed) what they DO know is that they love each other and i so hope that everything will fall into place eventually: with good communication (they’ve already shown that they’re capable of that)

Idk, I've never really felt like Izzy's problem was homophobia. It didn't seem like he was upset that they were gay -- it seems like he was upset because he's in love with Ed and now he's watching Ed be hopelessly in love with Stede.

He's been Ed's right hand man for so long, they've lived a certain lifestyle together and he's spent years being loyal to Ed even through rough patches. So to find out that Ed was so miserable in that life, that they shared, and then watch him throw all of that away for Stede probably hurt him really badly. It doesn't make any sense to him that Ed would build the Blackbeard empire and reputation and then leave it all behind, Izzy included, for someone who's so far out of the realm of what that world is. He's scared of losing Ed.

And Stede is the opposite of him in every way so it probably hurts him to see that Ed is head over heels for someone who's nothing like him, like he will never be what Ed wants. I mean, Ed didn't even allow pets on the ship, but suddenly he has all of that emotional capacity for a guy that hasn't even done everything, been everything, that Izzy has? That would be hard to deal with. So when he's talking about Stede doing something to Ed's head and making mean comments about Stede's fashion and mannerisms, it comes off to me as "this man is what Ed wants but he's nothing like me and that makes me feel insecure and sad, so I'm going to attack him in response to make myself feel better because I lack the ability to handle emotions in a healthy way"

Pirates don't have feelings, or friends, or relationships, so Ed was probably the closest Izzy had ever had to any of those things.

He was basically crying when he thought he heard them having sex. That's jealousy. That's heartbreak. That's confusion. That's betrayal.

I'm absolutely not saying there isn't any homophobia but I am saying that I don't think that his issues with Stede are rooted in homophobia and I think any homophobia we see from him is a result of his perception of masculinity and what he's internalized

And despite analyzing him like this, I still can't make myself love him. I do see the appeal, I do see what others like in him, but I can't get past how upset his behavior made me throughout the show.
