   her eye is black, and your jaw is tight as you    constantly switch from staring at the ground to    staring at the purple bruise. 

                 your fist tightens each time you do.

   this is your fault. for getting lydia into this kind   of danger. for letting her be there in situations   where defending herself is nearly impossible.   you’re lucky that the only guilt you have to live   with is this, and not a much graver situation.

   after a few long moments of avoiding eye contact,   and feeling your stomach twist, you finally catch   the pair of green eyes and doesn’t flicker away.   all there is behind yours is apologies. lydia never   deserved this. she should have never gone through   any of it. 

         eyes blinking, you let out a small sigh before moving         forward and hesitantly lifting your hand to her cheek.         your feet stop moving until they’re barely skimming         hers and you bring your lips to kiss next to her eye         ——the pain of a black eye might not be much, but,         you wrap your fingers around her wrist while your lips         are there and lessen the pain, anyway.

                                                       it’s the least you can do.
