Probably not tbh. I know Wilbert so often said that he was out of ideas and then turned right around to produce another absolute banger that we might be tempted to dismiss the boy crying about wolves. But the modernisation programme really gave him his best ongoing conflict and that was over; his stock of ideas probably would have run out in the '70s or at least in the '80s.
Twenty-six books was a great run. He surely did not have another 16 in him.
(Though I admit I should have loved to see him tackling the various developments of B.R. diesels and preservation drama in real time, rather than Christopher!)
