hey gang!!!!!!!! birth control SHOULD be free!!!!! it is healthcare and we should not have to pay $300 CAD (that's $218.88 USD by the way) every year to get the pill without a prescription. even WITH a prescription, it can easily be $25+ each month. birth control is not a luxury. it is healthcare and it is necessary. some provinces have it for free, but ontario doesn't and that is a massive problem. you're disabled/low income/can't see a doctor for a prescription? have fun, the government's screwing you over completely! so if you want birth control in ontario you better hope you're under 25 so OHIP has your back, because otherwise you're paying hundreds of dollars each year.

and that is so incredibly wrong.

Canada sure is smug about our health care when we come in 2nd last, beating only the USA for our health care system when comparing high-income countries. Lester Pearson and Tommy Douglas would be ashamed.

If you witness an injustice of some sort, especially due to government policy, a great way to have your voice heard is to contact a reporter. I promise there are people looking to write about stories like yours.

There are also a ton of freelance journalists out there, and independent news outlets like Canadaland (although I don't know if they take tips), if you don't like the mainstream ones.

If you're indigenous and live in Canada, but not sure that CTV, Global, and CBC would pick up your story, APTN might be interested.

Changes to OHIP take effect: What you need to know

The Ontario Ministry of Health claimed the changes will save taxpayers an estimated $83 million.

Changes to the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) are now in effect, leaving several services unfunded for coverage.

Those changes come after recommendations from a physician-led group reviewed coverage for OHIP insured services.

In August, the group delivered 11 recommendations regarding tests and procedures to Health Minister Christine Elliott.

Elliott and the Ontario Medical Association accepted the changes.

My dad is in the hospital for a heart attack.

I'm not asking for anything. Not from any of you. I want him to be okay and get better but I'm from Ontario and I know I won't have to worry about him recieving care versus going into lifelong debt.

He's been in the hospital nearly six hours now. He's had a CAT scan, an angiogram, an echocardiogram, and I don't even know what else. He's sedated and will be for at least twenty four hours. Likely, he'll be in the hospital until Monday (today is Wednesday, so looking at six or so days).

Thinking about people without universal health care, I'm thankful for where I live.

Ontario, Canada isn't perfect, not by a long shot. But I pay more tax so that my dad, a retired man, can be admitted to the hospital for life saving care without having to worry about an impossible bill upon release.

Dad...get better. I'm not ready to say goodbye.

Hi, is you can, can you please give me detailed instructions on how to get top surgery covered by OHIP? Im super confused, I got my CAMH letter about a year ago, and dont know what to do? Do i just book an appointment with dr. mclane and its all free? Im super confused

If you went through CAMH’s assessment program (I think it was called Gender Identity Clinic), an application for funding would have been sent to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Once processed by the Ministry, a funding decision letter is sent out to you. The letter would indicating what services you’ve been approved for and where you can have it done, a long with a time in which the service has to be done by. 

Check who your funding was approved for. If you were not approved for Dr. McLean and wish to see him, contact CAMH (or who did your application to the Ministry) and see if they can send another application to the Ministry to switch your surgeon. OHIP funding for Dr. McLean covers the mastectomy portion of the surgery, should you want the additional contouring it costs $2000+tax.

If you were approved for Dr. McLean, contact his office and set up a consultation appointment.
