I want season 10 to be the last.
Not because I don’t like this show. I obviously do, as I have a blog dedicated to it. I do like this show, and that’s why I want it to end after s10. Let me explain further by drawing a parallel to Doctor Who, a show I’m sure most of you are familiar with.
In the last episode of DW, we finally got to see a new doctor – and now before you send me hate, I love Matt’s doctor, I absolutely adore him – but I think the regeneration happened too late. I had already grown tired of Eleven, the plot wasn’t working for me anymore, and I started to…not like him as much anymore. What David did was admirable, he left at his peak, because he didn’t want that to happen. He didn’t want to stay too long, so that there wouldn’t be anything new to his character (x).
Series 7 of Doctor Who was in my opinion quite bad. I didn’t like it at all, because the stories weren’t similar to the ones that I once fell for when I started watching the show. With Twelve coming in, I hope we’ll see some refreshments to the show. That is the point of changing doctors, the show can be renewed and through that go on more or less forever.
Supernatural doesn’t have that element, at least not in the same way. Seasons 1-5 are to me the real SPN, the rest is something that didn’t quite turn out the way they were intended, but that’s a different matter that I won’t go into further now. For SPN to go back to that amazing show, one or more of the following things need to happen:
continuity
Wouldn’t it be absolutely brilliant to watch a show where the writers actually watch the show they’re writing for? A good finale to the show would in my opinion include end!verse. If they choose to work with that for 10a, which I suppose will be airing while we’re still in 2014, that would for me be e p i c. Or at least some acknowledgement that it’s there would be nice.
less fillers
I suppose this has to do with continuity as well, but I thought I’d put it under a separate title. The reason season 5 is my favourite is because there are basically no fillers, the episodes have all got to do with the plot somehow, and that makes it interesting to watch. Now of course a show with 22-23 episodes per season isn’t going to work without fillers, but that’s not my wish. I just want less of them, and more continuity, more coherent plot.
working with the plot
Season 9 has so far been a disappointment to me. The writers had some uh-maze-ing material to work with – fallen angels, the war, crowley/abaddon, human cas – but the latter was somehow almost ignored and instead of actually exploring how draining human life can be, they threw the opportunity away. What I was looking forward to in this season was the exploration of the characters that were spoken of by Misha (and perhaps someone else?) before it started airing, but so far we have seen very little of that. If there had been less fillers, and instead working with this amazing plot, I wouldn’t have been this disappointed.
For s10, I want to beg the writers to stick to the plot. If it’s a filler, then please acknowledge that there is one.
character development
You do things to your character, then you ask yourself, how are they affected by this? Where will they go next? What are their goals; their ambitions? Personally I feel like the boys have been struggling with the same issues for a very long time now, and something new needs to happen, and I’ve been trying to avoid it throughout this text, but I don’t think I can anymore.
Sam and Dean are what? 31 and 35? I know they are hunters, and they’re not “normal”, but at their age they should be starting to look out for settling down. We’ve already seen Sam’s attempts at this in s8, and even though they failed, Sam has expressed some kind of need for permanency in form of a relationship. I could go on babbling about how this has always been Sam’s desire, but not this time.
So what about Dean, then? The only logic way for Dean to go (once again, in my opinion), is to go with Cas. This is not going to be a Destiel meta. There are plenty of those out there, and I don’t need to explain yet again that it’s there. And just like with any other ships, not every fan will be happy with them. But it would be a natural way to make the show take a step forward, let alone stand out as a good example on a clash between stereotypes in media. I need to stop here before this actually turns into a Destiel meta after all, sorry if it got confusing, I’m just very passionate about this subject.
*astrid picks up her end!verse-stick and pokes you in the ribs with it*
Destiel would tie together all above mentioned examples of how the show could still be an amazing show. There would be continuity (see end!verse); less fillers as they would have to work with the relationships of both Dean and Cas, but also all of Team Free Will; working with the plot through both continuity, less fillers and character development.
I want season 10 to be the last season.
Because I don’t want my show to be hurt more than it already is.
Because I want it to end with a bang.
