mince pies were originally savory (and in fact were middle eastern - they were brought back by crusaders in the 13th century, maybe one of the earliest examples of cultural (mis)appropriation...), with mince and dried fruit and spices, but during the victorian era they became sweeter and now just contain dried fruit and spices.
whoa, I did not know any of this. I personally am struggling to understand how anyone would want to mix FRUIT with meat, but yeah, yikes to the cultural appropriation.

I can't talk about the food because I like eggnog and of I think about what makes it I won't like it anymore. And mince pies aren't a thing where I live, so I don't know much about that. But I can talk about lights. For us, our "extravagant" utility, if you will, switches by season. In the summer, we have a high water bill, but in the winter, our electricity bill goes up bc of the lights. Even so, the lights don't really use that much electricity, even if there are tons.
lmao. I feel you. and I see. I figured the heating bill would go up as well during the winter, but several people are telling me lights aren’t that big a deal.

regarding the lights, you can buy timers which lots of people do for outside lights so you can set them to come on at like 6 in the evening and go off at 11 (or whatever your preference) so you don't have to manually do it every night and if you accidentally fall asleep they don't stay on all night long

I can't comment on the food seeing that I am not a brit and as far as I know and remember from my trip to England almost everything seemed pretty disgusting to me, but as far as the lights go they do not consume much energy so even if you leave them on all day it is still pretty cheap.
lmfao so sorry british food isn’t to your taste :P tbh the only british food I really like is fish and chips, and scones with jam and cream. so I feel you.
and right, yeah, I guess christmas lights aren’t as energy consuming as regular lightbulbs because their purpose is to decorate rather than be bright enough to see clearly in a room.

1. i’ve never been a fan of eggnog drinkin smthn that viscous weirds me out. eggyolk/milk/cream/sugar/nutmeg. and often bourbon. 3. depends on the type/# of lights. incandescents can be yikes esp the bigass size-of-yr-thumb bulbs (~$15ish/string per season). LED’s are $0.30-0.50ish/string tho depending on bulb size, n also don’t get hot. cld maybs fit 2-4 strings on a tree?
