Those of you who are Polish or linguistically similar (Czech, idk what more) probably noticed, but Boromir would be a perfectly legit Medieval Polish (Slavic in general?) name, meaning more or less "peace in the forest". Faramir is a bit trickier and needs some anachronism, but "fara" is a type of a church, so "peace in the church", or to make it more setting-appropriate, "peace in the hall".
Let's translate those back to Sindarin using that one instruction for name-making. So, as the wise the dictionary says:
forest = taur hall = There's nothing I can find in sindarin, for etymological reasons let's go with gobel which is walled town / house, makes sense in the context peace = îdh
Surprisingly there's nothing to tweak according to the instruction, so Taurídh and his younger brother Gobelídh (both sound so dumb…)
…Now I need a fic where Boromir and Faramir go on a stealth mission using those as their fake names.
The thing I would’ve killed to see more of in Sybil and Sam’s relationship is how both partners become more emotionally open with one another over time. Even if it’s just a small moment between them that shows off how their partnership is built with love, patience and trust.
We see a brief glimpse of it in the beginning after they first meet, but what if it was expanded upon to show how Sybil feels comforted and acknowledged when Sam listens to her talk about her dragons. Talking about dragons is something she takes so much pride in since its a topic she cares deeply about. So, having someone sit there and listen to her talk without judgement or showing disinterest would make her feel seen in a way she hasn’t experienced much before. Because before, most of the people in her social standing that she would talk to don’t really care about dragons the same way she does. But Sam taking the time to listen and even take a small interest because he knows this is important to her would send Sybil over the moon with happiness because it shows he does care about her.
And of course, I see Sybil reciprocating her feelings for Sam by being his rock during turbulent times in his life and career. With Sam, I imagine sometimes he has really, really bad days. Days where by the end all the angry has seeped out and left him feeling tired to the bone. When he has one of those days, Sybil would be there to wrap him up in a big warm hug and rub his back until he feels better enough to let go. She’ll always be the one he opens up to to get stuff off his chest and help him work through his emotions because she cares greatly about his well being. And sometimes, he will cry on her shoulder if it was a particularly nasty day because they have built that foundation of trust with one another that makes him feel safe to be vulnerable around her.
Point is, Sam and Sybil have a really good dynamic between them that I feel like ought to have been expanded on just the tiniest bit more.
i was assigned to write fanfic for my writing class. fml
