I wish I could erase Dunmeshi from my memory. I wish I could go back in time and go in blind. Because now, that’s impossible. Because some people decided they weren’t going to be courteous, because they decided they would BLAST spoilers for Dunmeshi all over like jizz on a porn actress’s face, like a fire hydrant that hasn’t been closed properly.
I was truly, really interested in Dunmeshi before it aired. The premise seemed cool, the characters seemed cool, the vibe seemed cool, the author especially seems really cool. I was invested!
But then people in some Discord servers I’m in — and let’s be real, also some people I follow here on Tumblr — decided to act like spoilers don’t matter. They decided to force-feed me the twists and turns of the story whether I wanted it or not. At least, that’s what it feels like. Because EVERY FUCKING DAY it feels like it gets rubbed in my face. There’s a specific fucking twist involving a form of one of the characters that is posted about EVERY DAY. Multiple times a day. And I am so pissed off. I am irrationally pissed off.
I wanted to experience this show on my own terms, to have a modicum of control over how I engage with this story. And now I can’t anymore.
People say “if something is spoilt and it ruins your experience, then it wasn’t a good piece of media anyway or it doesn’t have rewatch value”, or alternately “if something is spoilt and it ruins your experience, YOU just don’t have the right mindset”. But at least for me, there is a real and significant difference between having a show spoilt and then watching it, and watching it by oneself for the first time and then rewatching it. I can rewatch stuff like Kill La Kill or Ghost in the Shell even though I know all the spoilers already, and still enjoy it, because it wasn’t spoilt for me the first time. It’s about control over how one engages with a piece of media. It’s common fucking courtesy.
I’m just so fucking done with Dunmeshi and it HURTS because I really really really wanted to give it a shot. And now I’m gonna have to wait for that feeling of bitterness and rage to leave me in order to give it another shot, which might take a long time, or it might never happen. I don’t know.
