10 YEAR REFLECTION: Sound Energy - one of the most eye-opening experiences in the filming of 'Esoteric African Knowledge was visiting a shrine house in Mamponteng, a community near Kumasi In the Asante Region of Ghana. Here the healers/medicine people are known as Okomfo, which literally means to 'prophesy', but to get into that state of revelation the individual invites the spirit in through Sound. A group plays time-honoured rhythms and patterns maintained across generations whilst the Okomfo dances in tune. In the process of sound-making and dancing, the sound energy released provides the right frequency at which the Okomfo's essence correlates with that of the entity summoned, so a union can be formed between both beings. It is a unison that complements communication across realms, which is why the term 'possession' is so inaccurate as it describes a state of 'enforced takeover' not a mutually symbiotic bond.
