it's genuinely so funny to me that most people's takeaway from the conversation between Snow and Haymitch in SOTR was that Snow's a sad old man because he couldn't get over something that had happened decades prior.

like, be so for real for a second. tell me that you haven't talked about the same situation a bajillion times. tell me that you haven't rehashed things. tell me that you haven't beat a dead horse because of a sliver of new information. because I sure have.

'I'm totally over it, it's just funny how...'

'I'm not even thinking about that anymore, but you know what...'

might as well hand him a glass of wine and put him on my bestfriend's couch because he's just like me. he needed to vent.

my personal hell, but there are no fiery pits, just the sanitization of characters, people bending over backwards to excuse negative traits, justify wrongdoings, and water down flaws to make characters fit into a box they deem likeable, erasing the defining characteristics that made the characters interesting to begin with.

My thoughts on Snow in Sunrise on the Reaping as someone who's been obsessed with him ever since the first Hunger Games book came out.

Spoilers below the cut. I just love yapping about him, so keep reading if you want to go down a rabbit hole with me.

I absolute love how Snow is portrayed in SOTR, especially, and this might come as a surprise to those who know how much I love this man, the off-putting way he is portrayed in one scene in particular. Yea, that one, you know the one.

At first glance the three versions of him that we got over the years (THG series, TBOSAS, and now SOTR) might seem completely different but they fit together seamlessly in my opinion. It shows a very believable evolution over time. Desperate, impulsive, paranoid in TBOSAS, calm, collected, calculative in THG series, a blend of both versions in SOTR.

I'm gonna zero in on 3 things in particular here.

The first is the glimpse we get of Snow at the parade. He's outwardly calm, collected, taking in the chaos, to a degree he's amused by it. He already knows who's going to get punished for it, it doesn't really matter. He's in control, the tributes are going to be in the arena and the organizers are replacable, it's a nuisance but not the end of the world. Until he sees the flint striker, and he's reminded of a time that he was not in control. The facade crumbles.

The second is the scene I mentioned above, the one in Plutarch's home. I love that scene for so many reasons. It's not pretty, it's uncomfortable, Snow throwing up all over the place is undeniably disgusting. And I should hate it for those reasons, should probably feel repulsed, especially because it goes against the idea I have of him. But I don't and it doesn't.

Just like everyone else in Panem, we know what Snow does to people in the Capitol that are in his way or mess up, it's an open secret. But in SOTR we get a closer look. It drives the level of dedication home, the lengths he is willing to go to. If that is what he suffers despite the antidote, the other guy suffers a way worse fate. Snow even says so himself. It's a warning. And Snow is smart about it, providing reasonable doubt by taking the poison himself but that doesn't change the fact that he, too, isn't making a secret out of it, openly hinting at it. It's a deterrent. It's the hubris that will get him eventually that shines through.

Here I'm gonna go out on a limb for a moment with a theory. There would have been other ways to show all this, ways that don't feature Snow covering Plutarch's home in puke. So, to me, that means it's a conscious choice. I believe that Suzanne Collins consciously made the choice to lean into the disgusting, sweaty, unappealing bodily functions aspects of it. To me it almost feels like she went 'Imma make sure you aren't going to thirst over him this time.' after the reaction to the conventionally attractive version of him in TBOSAS. (Teenage me was thirsting over that 90-yr-old man, adult me is, and future me will continue to, a lil puke ain't gonna stop me, so if that was the intention it didn't work. But I am going off track here, so back to the point.)

The third thing is the milk. Both during the scene at Plutarch's house, as well as the sponsor gift. The latter (and the fact that milk comes up repeatedly after that) makes it clear that Snow knew that Haymitch chose to drink it, rather than hand it over (loved that btw, powermove). We all know the consequences for Haymitch but he wasn't the only one involved.

So where does that leave Plutarch? Snow believed him. The fact that Plutarch rises through the ranks and becomes an integral part later on, proves that. Now, I am not saying that Snow believed Plutarch when he said the servants messed up the milk, but I am saying that Snow believed Plutarch believed it was the servants because the only other option would be that Plutarch was covering for Haymitch.

But why would Snow believe him? It's Snow's view of the world. He had no reason to doubt Plutarch because Plutarch has everything he could possibly want - money, status, power to some degree. Snow isn't suspicious of Plutarch, because, in Snow's eyes, Plutarch has nothing to gain. It is that same misguided belief that ultimately gives Plutarch the ability to deceive Snow in THG series the way he did.

People will uphold a system of oppression as long as it benefits them, no matter their place in the food chain they will uphold it as long as someone else has it worse. We see that with the people in the Capitol, the Peacekeepers, District 1, District 2. The people worthy of suspicion are those that have the least to lose and the most to gain. So Plutarch simply flies under the radar for Snow because he couldn't possibly want to change things when it wouldn't improve his situation.
