"you say you're a feminist but you always like the villain/bad men characters!"
Pause.
First of all, my feminism is reality and fiction is fiction
Second of all, I don't like him despite he's a jackass and I try to make excuses to make him look like a good guy. No. I love him because he's a jackass. And I wouldn't want him any other way
He's so pathetically insecure, comically violent, cartoonishly bad, funnily charming, a greatly written bad guy, irredeemable asshole-ish, brutally honest, childishly potty mouthed, amazingly character-built, and is played by my all time favorite actor ever
People need to stop trying to excuse their behavior by "women love bad boys". No they don't, that's a story and a fictional character. Just say I'm an asshole and don't want to change and be over with it and stop wasting people's time
Ascended Astarion - A Silent Scream Into the Void
"I don't mind people playing the Ascended route as long as..." ...They understand it's the bad ending. ...They admit that Astarion doesn't heal. ...They don't romantasize it. ...They acknowledge it's about the cycle of abuse* Stop! Please! Because what I'm reading is that you do mind. In fact, you mind a lot, unless the person play Ascending Astarion exactly the way you think they should. This attitude does not mark you as a beacon of tolerance, quite the opposite in fact. Let other people enjoy their fictional villains the way they want and cut the judgement. It will not affect you in any way whatsoever, unless you go out of your way to find opinons you don't agree with or art you don't like, and then choose to get all upset about it. Don't do that! And please understand that when you suggest that it's ok for people to explore this route if they are processing some sort of trauma, Or worry that they are only doing it because they are young (bonus point for adding female) and therefore vulnerable and impressionable, Or assume they are unable to correctly interpret media, due to lack of education/experience, You are being incredibly condescending, not to mention mysogynistic and homophobic. *And for the love of all that is holy, please go and do some research on The Cycle of Abuse and stop coming out with this pop-pyschology Twitterpated nonsense that boils down to, 'Hurt people, hurt people.' Suggesting that all abuse victims become abusers is wrong. And not only is it wrong it's cruel. Thank you for coming to my Tedtalk.
yea, my boy (the fictional man that I am obsessed with) did some messed up things (horrors beyond human comprehension), but that's exactly why he's my boy (I wanna fuck him)
one thing that might be worse than a villain getting a poorly written redemption arc is when they get an easy death.
so many instances where an absolutely SADISTIC AND HORRIBLE villain who has tortured people in their basement or performed body horror esque scientific experiments on newborns or some shit just.. gets shot in the head or something. easy death. no pain, no consequences, no time to regret what they did, NOTHING.
at least with a bad redemption arc, you can imagine that maybe in the future, someone might hold the character accountable.
but with this trope, there's nowhere to go. the person who caused so much pain and suffering is just dead and they're never going to face the repercussions of what they did.
probably one of the most satisfying and cathartic villain deaths i've seen so far is of the old lady from Weapons. like that shit was so DESERVED, i was pleasantly surprised. i did NOT expect the movie to go there.
and this might make me sound demented but i need more villains to be literally ripped to shreds by their victims. stop choosing the coward's way out, make your villains SUFFER.
Me reading Liveship Traders: Man, I don’t think I’m ever gonna hate a character as much as I hate Kyle Haven
Robin Hobb, about to introduce Satrap Cosgo:
your honor im just a girl
Sometimes I wonder why nowadays I still just receive the oversimplified message of “good” defeating/killing “evil” in many western popular media.
Why not “good” co-existing with “evil”?
Why not “good” salvaging “evil”? I mean salvation in the sense of not making “evil” sacrifice but survive.
Why not “good” seeing itself in “evil” and vice versa?
Why not “good” understanding “evil”?
Why not both “good” and “evil” destabilizing themselves?
