I recently acquired a few thousand slides from my parents dated 1958-1972. they belonged to my grandfather who I never met. Going through them all is a process but i have found some rather neat things!

3. Kennedy campaigning in 1960 (!)

4. The SS Edward L. Ryerson, a great lakes freighter which has been docked at Fraiser shipyards since 2009 (which i see every single day on my drive to work!)

Gallows humor

Sharon sometimes seems resigned to the proposition that I'll meet my ultimate fate out on the lake - pulled into Huron, perhaps, by a big fish that I can't bear to give up on". (I say there are worst ways to go).

But I know she's only engaging in a little gallows humor.

As I was on my way out one recent morning, she went through her check list of doom: "Let's see ....," she said. "Old boat, old back-up motor, old guy ... big lake ... what could go wrong ...?"

I think it's just her way of saying, "Be careful out there."
