Hello from Havana!
*This text was originally a proposal for another site and has been modified to post on this journal*
Three years ago i traveled to Cuba just to discover the beauty of its vintage letters. So i decided to document this nostalgic journey to share a little of the island’s type.
Hotel Nacional is the most famous hotel. It was inaugurated in the 30s.
Cinema Payret. Also a theatre once.
El Floridita. Ernest Hemingway used to hang out here. If you go there you should try their world famous Daiquiri.
Fin de Siglo was a department store. Lovely script now abandoned.
Formerly known as Capri, it used to be a cinema.
Since i was a child, i was curious about Cuba and its history. I grew up in a little town in Mexico where Fidel Castro lived before the revolution. They sailed from my hometown in the Granma Yacht hoping to arrive to Cuba and eliminate Batista’s dictatorship.
Coppelia is the government’s ice cream store opened in 1966. Fidel’s personal project. You can see long lines of people trying to get some ice cream in warm days.
Located in Vedado neighborhood, Yara Cinema is next to the Habana Libre Hotel, where Fidel Castro had his first office after winning the revolution.
America Theatre, Art Deco style.
People that leave the island often go to Miami to pursue a better life
Johnson drugstore is located in Old Havana. Inaugurated in 1914.
Casa Quintana in Art Deco style.
While walking in Old Havana the vintage cars will catch your eyes for sure. A cuban symbol that makes you travel in time. Despite being american manufactured, it fits perfectly a Havana postcard.
The last day of my trip, while i was riding a public cab i got to see a little mural of the Granma Yacht’s quest. The name of my town –Tuxpan– was written in the wall showing the course the yacht took to arrive to Cuba. I couldn’t take a picture unfortunately.
Revolution Square. Che Guevara also departed from my little hometown to Cuba in the Granma Yacht. Hasta la victoria, siempre.
Can please somebody take me back?
