au where remus gets to stay as defense against the dark arts teacher.

mcgonagall tiredly asks sirius if he’d like to stay as well and, as expected, sirius stays in remus’s quarters. the two of them let harry into their room whenever he wants and tell him stories about james and lily. remus discusses magic theory with hermione and sirius teaches ron how to duel. neither of them mention that they want to get to know harry’s friends better because it’s what james would have done.

dumbledore decides to replace the dead history of magic teacher with sirius. after a considerable amount of moaning and groaning, sirius accepts, and messes up the curriculum, school of rock style, and makes the students act out scenes in magic history for his entertainment. the students who care about learning are allowed to take a free period instead. dean and seamus, separately, come up to remus distraught about their crushes on each other, and he counsels them best he can. sirius curses snape and is almost sacked, by order of the malfoys, but manages to stay by the skin of his teeth. remus hosts study sessions and sirius gets flashbacks watching them. remus lets luna lovegood eat lunch in his room when people throw curses and bullies’ spells at her.

sirius gets drunk with professor trelawney and she sees a black dog in his wine glass, somehow. he transforms, and students come into class finding a tipsy trelawney and a strange dog dashing around, upsetting the tables. sirius and remus go out to hogsmeade together and go to madam puddifoot’s on valentine’s in honor of mary, which means a great deal since they both hate the place and the day. they run into students on dates and collectively promise to never say anything about it again. they borrow the map and cloak from harry and sneak around the place, making sure all their old haunting grounds are still there. they make a memorial to james and lily in their favorite picnic spot out on the grounds.
