Braeval Distillery. Old Malt Cask from Hunter Laing. 50% abv Sherry butt. 15 years old. Golden. Thin fast legs. Quite oily looking. Nose: Honey, cucumber, a wooden lathe smell...butterscotch, dusty pears. Palate: very sweet. Acrid band across back of tongue to balance sweetness. Nice structure. Rolling finish. Inside - oily minerality, custard, pleasant. Dusty wooden floorboards. A round fat aroma! 2nd palate: slight fizz and a acrid tannins band across back of the tongue balances the rounded sweetness. A new bottle of love arrived today! When I say love I mean when I saw it - it was love a first sight! I love sherried Bowmore, and I love the looks of these old versions of Douglas Laing’s Old Malt Cask series! ESPECIALLY in these clear bottles so the natural color of the whisky really shows!!😍 I’ve always wanted one just by the looks of them. And when I saw this one as a Bowmore on Sherry Cask I could not resist! That said - I also know I could be in Bowmore’s “danger zone” 1988 spirit - I’ve read tasting notes that wasn’t exactly uplifting, or just average or right down odd/bizarre notes of burnt rubber, rotting greens ect. Time will tell how bad(or not) this - my beloved Bowmore whisky truly is. But for now, I couldn’t be more happy - it’s a little beautiful piece of independent whisky bottler history!😍
