Greg de Klerk recently completed a tour where the main focus was on South Africa's Woodpecker species. This Ground Woodpecker (Geocolaptes olivaceus) was one of eight species seen and is particularly interesting because, aside from it being the largest Woodpecker in the region, it is a terrestrial species. Often found perching on mounds and boulders, they feed almost exclusively on ants by excavating their nests just below the surface and probing the cavities with its long tongue.
