Travel Tuesday: A Sweet Tour of Georgetown (Washington D.C.)
Georgetown caught me completely off guard and enchanted me this weekend. I’ve been to Washington D.C. a few times now, so I was happy to discover and fall in love with a new area of the city. I think it was the combination of old world wealthy architecture and student-y amenities that really caught me. That and the abundance of delicious baked goods. Here’s what I suggest you do and (more importantly) eat!
To Do
The Georgetown Waterfront Park is lovely even when the temperatures are hovering around freezing like they were today. In the summer I think it would be even more lovely but for a nice wintertime walk, it provided a great backdrop.
While in Georgetown, be sure to check out the beautiful houses. I walked along P street and saw so many gorgeous homes. You’re certain to be a little envious of the people who get to live here but it’s the good kind of envious.
Finally, shopping. Lots and lots of shopping. The stores aren’t cheap but for those more budget conscious there are a couple of thrift shops (including a Buffalo Exchange) and a really fancy TJ Maxx where I got amazing Nine West flats for a great price. To Eat
We had the most amazing brunch at Kafe Leopold, which is a great Austrian cafe with a kind of Scandinavian type decor. There will be a wait so this isn’t the place to go if you’re in a rush. They text you with updates on the wait so if you have time you can go shop while waiting the 45 min to an hour that it will take to get seated.
Once seated we immediately spotted what looked like the amazing breakfast ever. After some speculating and asking the waitress, we found out it was the Kaiserschmarrn mit Zwetschegen-roster (better known as the Emperor’s Pancake). This was a thick pancake with currants and plum compote which was really buttery, filling and not overpowered by either fruit. Lauren got the salmon hash, which looked good, but I am happy I went for the sweet! I couldn’t pass up such a great pancake.
Another plus was the really good coffee. It was strong so even as I added milk the coffee shone through.
Another great find was Baked and Wired, which has consistently been voted as the best cake in D.C. and for good reason. I’ll give you a sneak peak of the cupcake counter today but check back tomorrow for more goodies and a review of the cafe overall. I went twice so I have lots of goodies to talk about!
Finally, for those of you who are on the macaron train be sure to check out Olivia Macaron. I came at the end of the day so there were only a few options left, which although not ideal at least shows that they are fresh. The almond cookies were really light and lovely and the cassis jam was so tart and tasty. The raspberry was a little too sticky and not as flavorful but the cookie still shone through.
That was my food and walking tour of Georgetown! Next time I think I’d like to check out the university campus. Is there any food you suggest I try in DC? Any neighborhoods you love?
