Since it is the Olympics season, I thought I will share my connect with the Olympics. That’s me holding the official London Olympic torch at the Coco Cola museum. . Once upon a time, I was good in track and field but then, I tore quite a few ligaments. Else…. . . …. no “else” because I ran against the best (district sports hostel athletes) and they kicked my butt!!!! Being good in a school wasn’t good enough against these professionally trained dudes. . My mom’s dad was a boxer in the Indian Navy and was a successful one. Inspired by the 1982 Asian games, I do remember wearing his medals and jumping around. And in the process I lost them. And my mom wasn’t happy. And between shifting houses, I have lost most of mine. . Growing up, I do remember watching the games and having favourites. Carl Lewis was my main man and hence, I ended up doing 100m, 200m and long jump. The Ben Johnson episode is still very clear in my memory because my idol was trashed. . I have total respect to all the Indian athletes because in India (except for cricket), sports is a hobby and not a career. . PS: I tore my ligament during my long jump trials. The pit was substandard. My spikes locked into the ground and my ligament snapped! And now (30yrs later), I noticed another such substandard pit in a very popular school.
