In the eyes of God, Steve Rogers was dead. He was still breathing, still walking around, but he was dead.
This fic is my attempt at a functioning A/B/O universe, since most stories with this premise leave me wondering how the society could have developed to modernity with all the issues raised by heats/bonding/male pregnancy. Steve Rogers is learning to cope without his bond-mate in the 21st century, and deal with the new threats the century throws at him. For the Steve/Bucky Big Bang.
They’re a neighborhood institution: the two alpha boys who manage not to kill each other twice a year. Bucky’s always been proud of that, proud that they’re above their hormones, but now he isn’t so sure. Steve is spoiling for a fuck, but in the absence of an omega or beta, a fight will have to do. Bucky keeps his body language open and non-threatening, and raises his chin to bare his throat. He fights himself all the way.
The asset is not having an optimal day.
“Our cycles are syncing,” his mission says from the other side of the exam room, quiet and apologetic. He’s standing against the wall and the asset is sitting on an exam table. They’re in … a tower. The asset isn’t sure why. He doesn’t feel right, overheated and over-energized, and isn’t sure about that either.
“So you’re–my alpha, then,” he says haltingly, eyes flicking up to his mission’s face. Not his mission anymore. But always his mission, he thinks.
“Other way around,” his mission answers with a smile that all of the asset’s training can’t decipher the full meaning behind. It looks injured, and … and things the asset doesn’t know.

Notes: omegaverse au where Bucky thinks he's an omega because of hydra conditioning and mistakes Steve for an alpha
The world has changed since Steve woke up. Alphas and omegas are no longer treated like scum and that would be great except…except that Bucky’s still dead and Steve still has no idea if he was carrying their pup when the plane crashed.
Everybody—including Steve himself—had been surprised when he’d turned out to be an alpha. The other boys had pegged him for an omega, and a bad one at that; one of the many jokes at his expense was that Barnes only liked him because Steve was even lower on the food chain than an omega with delusions of beta-status. Steve can still remember the feral grin Bucky’d given him after they’d heard that one for the first time, blood on his teeth from his split lip, and the way his voice had cracked when he’d said “I like you for a lot more’n that, Rogers.”
