Nurseyweek Prompts!!

Alrighty, so it took a bit of time but the prompts are finally prepared and ready. Hals and I decided to go with something of an overarching theme. We’ve done Nursey’s life at different ages, but there are also poems we’ve connected to each stage of life that people can draw inspiration from;

Nursey Week Day 3 - Challenge

Nursey week, Day 3 (again, super late! sorry!) ( @nurseyweek)

“Ugh,” Nursey thumped his head down onto the kitchen table. “Why did I think this was a good idea?”

“Nurse, you okay?” Nursey looked up at the sound of his captain’s voice.

“No, Holster, I am decidedly not okay. I took this stupid biology course because I thought ‘Hey, I was really good at this in high school, I can definitely fill my science credit this way’ but it turns out either I’m an idiot or my high school teacher just gave us very easy work, or possibly both! And I have a test next week and I don’t understand any of the material and I’m going to fail and get kicked off the team.” Nursey flung his hands in the air and flopped his head down on the table again. “Ow,” he said, his voice muffled.

Holster pulled out the chair next to Nursey. “Okay young frog, let’s figure this out then. No one is going to get kicked off the team, and from what I’ve seen of your writing, you do have quite the brain in there, so we can make this work.” Holster pulled his phone out of his pocket and tapped out a quick message. “Rans is on his way home from class, he should be here in about 10. In the meantime, let’s get some of this stuff organized here. What’s your test on?”

Nursey slid his syllabus towards Holster and pointed at it. “These two chapters, plus a lab we did three weeks ago. I have the lab report right here.” He points at a different paper.

Holster nods and takes the two papers. He flips through the lab report and compares it to the syllabus. “Okay, so you actually did pretty well on the lab report, and to be honest? If the writing matches who did the work, looks like your partner screwed up one section and brought you guys down a bit.” Holster gestured for Nursey to hand over the textbook he was currently draped over. “Do you have sticky notes?” Nursey produces them from his bag and Holster tabs the chapters he needs to study.

“How is this going to help?”

“You’ll see. Okay, so first things first, don’t follow Rans’ method of studying - he’s great at doing study schedules but he gets too worked up about them. Second, Rans and I are going to make you a study schedule to help prepare you. Now, he knows more about biology than I do, but I make killer flashcards, so I’ll help with that. I have a friend that had this prof two years ago, she’s going to come over tonight to work on an econ project anyways, she can probably spare a few minutes to talk you through it a bit. Ollie is actually a pretty solid bio student, I think he has Wednesday nights free, you can probably hit him up for some help too.”

“Thanks Holtzy,” Nursey said. “I just - this is pretty different from my English courses and I got overwhelmed on where to start.”

“No problem Nurse. Now, make a list of the topics you know the most about, and the ones you aren’t sure on, because that’s how we’re going to make your study schedule. And then you’re gonna ace your test.” Holster smiled at him, then hollered up the stairs. “Bitty! Got any of those study muffins left?”

Just Nursey Things

In honor of Nursey’s birthday, and the fact that I had no time to write any of the prompts for Nursey Week because junior year of college is hell (and I found out about it three days before it started), I thought I would share some of my Nursey headcanons instead! And sorry in advance if this gets long, I just love Nursey so much.

Born to Alan Nurse and Maria Alvi

Derek’s dad is sort of similar to Shitty in my mind, which is why I think Nursey’s friends with Shitty in the first place

Alan Nurse is the director of The Nurse Foundation, which is an NYC-based nonprofit that works for social change

The Nurse Foundation started going global right around the time Derek was born, which meant his dad wasn’t always around

Derek’s mom is black and Pakistani, and is Director of Fundraising at The Public Theater in NYC, she also tends to travel around for work

Derek’s parents got divorced when he was five, but they stay friendly for his sake, and the fact that they enjoy being friends

Maria gets remarried when Derek is seven, to his stepmom Ashley Gallo

Ashley is a painter and former model who Derek has coined “the coolest person he’s ever met”

He went through a phase because of Ashley where he decided he wanted to be a painter too, but then he found drawing tedious and decided to try something else

And I was right about this getting long, so there’s more under the cut.

When Derek is seven, his dad takes him to a New York Rangers game, and Derek declares afterwards that he wants to play hockey, and the rest is history

Nursey had a huge crush on Jack Zimmermann during his juniors days (part of the reason he realizes he’s bi), but the crush has faded by the time he gets to Samwell, so he’s glad things will never get as weird as when Dex basically told Jack he liked his butt (Nursey’s never gonna let Dex live that one down)

Derek has one sibling, a half-sister named Bailey, from his dad’s first marriage

Bailey is seven years older than Derek and went to Yale for journalism

She lives in Boston, so once Derek starts going to Samwell, he visits her some weekends, and she’s been to a few of his home games

When SMH first meets Bailey, everyone (except for Shitty) is confused that she’s white

The Nurse Foundation is a pretty well-known organization, but nobody ever puts two and two together, until after meeting Bailey, when Ransom sends a side-by-side pic of Derek and his dad to the SMH group chat, and they all realize that they actually do look alike

When he first gets to Samwell, Nursey has a crush on Lardo, but then he realizes how in love with her Shitty is and just lets it fade away

Nursey didn’t really get into writing until the end of high school

His mom introduced him to Suzan-Lori Parks when he was 17 after he saw Father Comes Home From the Wars, he’s now obsessed with her, and she’s why he decided he wanted to do more writing in college

Nursey is a Moleskine journal hoe, he has like ten of them because he keeps losing the ones he has and then goes to buy another

Always has a notebook and a pencil handy

He’s left-handed, so the side of his hand smudges his writing, which he finds incredibly annoying but he’s used to it now

Is obsessed with A Tribe Called Quest 

Listens to Midnight Marauders whenever he needs to breathe or calm down

Nursey low-key wants to marry Frank Ocean

Shamelessly loves One Direction, and really has to convince Dex to do duets with him 

And this wouldn’t be a Nursey or a Valentine’s Day post without Dex!

Nursey was at first upset with Dex because he didn’t seem to acknowledge his white privilege

After Dex comes out to Nursey and Chowder at the end of first semester freshman year, he and Nursey start to coexist and become friends

Nursey realizes he has a crush on Dex right at the end of freshman year, hopes time away from him will nip the feelings in the bud (spoiler: it doesn’t)

Nursey overcompensates for his crush at the beginning of sophomore year by being super cold to Dex, and they start fighting again

Dex finally confronts Nursey about it, and Nursey admits he likes him

Dex just kind of goes, “oh” and then Nursey’s super embarrassed, but the next day Dex admits he likes Nursey too and asks him out

They kind of hook up in secret for a while and don’t really label what they’re doing until about the beginning of December (a bit after Jack and Bitty come out to the team); they tell Chowder first, then the rest of the team after break

They spend a lot of time in Nursey’s room, since Dex has a roommate

Their favorite thing to do is watch dumb movies together or just listen to music and talk

Nursey recommends Dex books to read, and then they talk about the books once Dex is finished with them

They do breakfast at Annie’s once a week

They like to talk to each other in weird voices and sometimes solely in One Direction lyrics
