i have a headcanon for how the king in yellow really works
basically, the king isn't an eldritch being, or a single definitive play - it's a lose concept. A living muse that first manifested itself to Robert Chambers that went on to stay relevant and linger around the minds of many, including us.
Everything about the king and his play is up to personal interpretation, and those interpretations are vessels(along side the creators/authors) used by that muse to interact with both the omniverse and our world. Yes. All versions of the king, from Harlan's variant with John and Yellow, to True Detective's false savior, to Signalis' inclusion of the play, to Mast88 and BlueShift's Yellowstar that was Celestia's vent oc, to the roleplay blog on here, to that fűcka$$ baby, are sockpuppets used by the muse. All versions of the king you see are not fanmade, because there is no one definitive version. All are almost the true faces of the king, for no one is able to see the muse itself
But just because the version are only sockpupets, doesn't mean you cant get attached to one...
This is also why we don't have a representative!KiY, yet there's a rep!Hildred, a rep!Arthur_and_John, a rep!D3rlord3 and so on. But we do have a representaverse!Carcosa where it's a Babel-esc library full of every single version of the play. A good amount of KiY related reps roam the place.
