on regret
Try as we might to always do right by others, we're inevitably gonna screw up at some point. It's an unfortunate part of being a human being, a creature known for its complexity. Sometimes we may even screw up multiple times in a similar way.
But I think our intention to do good and willingness to learn matters. We don't suddenly become monsters or lose all our worth just because of a mistake we made.
The sad truth is that we may not be forgiven, even if we ourselves don't consider the mistake unforgivable and are sure we would have forgiven the other if the roles were reversed.
But we should still forgive ourselves and give ourselves a chance to live and be happy, and learn how to do better. If we keep spiraling and punishing ourselves for whatever we did over and over, it won't actually help us grow and will only make us miserable. And that's not what we want to be or what will make us better people.
It's also worth noting that just because someone said you've done something bad doesn't always mean they're completely right. Reality, especially of human relationships, isn't always black and white. So don't let someone else's opinion of you - yes, even someone who you thought knew you well - define you. For example, just because someone thinks you're stupid doesn't have to mean you are objectively stupid. Maybe you just did one stupid thing that made them judge you as such. Or maybe someone said you were a bad friend to them. You must have done something to make them feel that way so it's worth examining, but it doesn't mean "bad friend" is now who you are as a whole - not only because you may have also done some things right, or only because you can change, but also because another friend might not consider you a bad friend just as you are.
Do the work. Reflect. Think of what you can learn from your experience. Let go of everything your mistakes cost you. Then take a deep breath, smile and move forward.
I have had this laying around for ages, so i finally got around to finishing it!
A little doodle of the first chapter of my overcomplicated sth fanfic, On Mistakes and Birthday Cakes.
they don't know i know this trick:
backslides and makes mistakes and breaks my ankles in holes i didnt see, stumbles down cliffs, gets consumed by the ocean that is the pit of my soul that pressurizes me until i am nothing but an open wound inside a wound inside one big scar
watches as nothing but sheer impulse grabs hold of me, iron clad grip, and then try to convince myself those few seconds dont define me for the rest of my life
mistakes are human, if flaws are human, i am the more human than most
did i do something wrong?
a fatal flaw of mine... you gotta tell me, i'm stupid.
Do you think mistakes difene us? İ allways feel bad about them and be harsh to myself
hi!
no, I don't! I think part of the nature of a mistake is that you never intended to make it in the first place, however that may be. personally, I think intentions are much closer to defining us but even then, I don't fully believe any one thing can define you.
without getting philosophical (which I can do very easily I love the concept of what makes us,, us generally) I think part of what defines you is a combination of your actions and intentions rather than mistakes.
when you make mistakes (which everyone does, there is no person in the world that hasn't made a mistake!) I think it can be really easy to be harsh to yourself but ultimately I think how you handle making that mistake and react to it is a lot more telling of you as a person than the mistake itself.
I'd be hypocritical if I tried to say I knew how to stop being harsh to yourself when you make mistakes, because it's something I struggle with as well, but I always try to remind myself that I can't change the past and no amount of being mean to myself about it will change that. as my mum always likes to tell me when I'm upset about a mistake I made "it's all learning" and she's right, I think you can see mistakes as a learning experience and use them to grow.
Making mistakes is part of what makes us human and I think it allows you to see who you want to be and in a way shows you how you can get closer to being that person.
Look after yourself my friend <3
as always, i am in no way a professional and this is just my opinion/what i would do in this situation! please take everything i say with a huge pinch of salt and obviously do what feels right to you!
Leave other people’s mistakes where they lie.
