Cross learnt from a young age to not complain, to keep his head down, to do tasks without being asked to do them and not seek credit for them. He learnt from a young age how to manage other people’s emotions, to keep them happy because the alternative always ended in tears and pain.
Life with Nightmare and the gang is different. They don’t expect things from him, don’t wish him harm. But years of trauma cannot simply be forgotten. Habits that helped him survive don’t just go away overnight. He tries to keep it together, tries to go about his life as he always has. But the others are starting to notice and they know things cannot continue as they are.
A very indulgent, whump, I think the term is? That being said, I enjoyed it a lot, as hurt/comfort is something I usually enjoy reading, & this is no exception. It's not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but the author executed their idea well, even if it is a bit, well, self indulgent.
