Hi. I have a question and I'm honestly just curious I'm not trying to start anything... I'm a sterek shipper and in tons of fics/gifsets/shipping them stiles is 16 or 17 so my question is how is that diff than the shurri thing u posted about since Derek is an adult? I shipped sterek when stiles was 16/17 in canon and read fics where's he's that age too.
To me, it’s really not that different from gross ass people shipping Shuri with a grown man. When I write Sterek, it’s only when they’re both legal adults because anything other than that creeps me out.
There is one thing that is sort of different with the Sterek situation. Derek’s age is never explicitly given. In the first episode, Stiles mentions that Derek is ‘only a few years older than us’ and Stiles must be at least sixteen to have a driver’s license in California. And in the original script, Derek was referred to as being nineteen years old.
Yes, that makes him an adult but considering most age of consent laws, which many people like to cite when shipping teenagers with adults, allow for someone who is 16 to date someone who is no more than four years older than them (at least, according to most age of consent laws I’ve studied). If Derek was actually nineteen at the time of meeting Stiles, as claimed in the script, then there would be nothing to be concerned about.
As it is, with Derek’s canon age being unconfirmed, it’s a delicate issue. In my opinion, and I can only give my opinion as a Sterek shipper, I don’t think it’s okay to ship them unless they both of legal age. Noting an attraction on Stiles’ part is one thing but I personally refuse to read any fic where Stiles is not an adult while dating or sleeping with Derek while underage because ‘consensual underage’ isn’t actually a thing.
