Universe: Doctor Who
Warnings: Weight loss, loss of sleep
Request: A 10th Doctor x reader where the reader tries keeping up with the timelord resulting in not eating and sleeping enough. The Doctor realises it after seeing the weight loss and steps in?
The doctor was a man with too much energy for his age. He could run for miles and barely pant, and he always seemed to be doing something. If you told him to stay seated in a plain room and not do anything till you come back, he’d not be able to. He would have made something by the time you come back.
But then again, he was alien, and you were merely human.
While he could last with minimal to no sleep for several days, you needed the 7 hours at least. While he barely ate (you complained that was why he was so thin, but he later explained that it was just how his regeneration presented him), you needed a minimal of two meals a day to survive.
At first you did try to keep up on your sleep and keep hydrated and fed, but that was difficult when you were basically chasing after someone who didn’t need the same needs as you, and it was impossible.
Sleep was minimal. When you did sleep, it was often disrupted by the TARDIS shaking, warping, the doctor needing your help or something attacking. Food, again, was minimal. You’d get to try some of the food on different planets, but they were just meant to be quick snacks- not full meals. If you were lucky you’d get some fish and chips or a burger if the Doctor popped by Earth, though that was rare.
You didn’t notice it at first, and honestly, neither did the Doctor, but he eventually did. It was when you were wearing a particular outfit. You’d brought this jumper with you when you first started travelling, and you wore it often. When you first wore it, it fit you perfectly. However, he noticed that the shoulder slid off you too easily and it buried you. His next sign was when you were reading a book. You were clearly trying to concentrate, but you kept drifting off into lala land and had to redo the entire page.
He didn’t say anything at first. He examined the situation. He even made a small call to Martha for a little help, and after some reassurance from a friend and doctor, he knew the reason for the change, and it wasn’t good.
He couldn’t bear the thought that you were in deteriorating health because of him. He had to act.
“Y/N?” He eventually called, making you look up. He motioned you over to the console. “Nothing seems to be wrong today… how about we go have a look around… anywhere you want to see? Any restaurants you’d recommend?” He asked you. You looked at him strangely, before nodding at the thought of food.
“Yeah, there was this place near where I lived as a kid, they shut it down a while ago. Is there any chance we can go back and eat from it when it was in its prime?” You asked, and he didn’t hesitate to nod and set course.
The entire time the doctor just watched you. He’d look away when you caught him. He was… quiet. Too quiet for him. “Come on, what’s wrong?” You finally asked him, leaning forward.
He was once again, quiet, not answering for a while. You could slightly hear his heel hitting the floor rapidly and he scratched his head. What was eating away at him?
“I’m worried about you.” He admitted, looking up at you. You sighed.
“I’ve told you this before, if you’re worried about me getting hurt on an adventure, don’t. I really enjoy it and I know how to handle myself-“
“That’s not it.” He stopped you, catching you off guard. “You’re losing weight. That jumper used to fit you. It doesn’t anymore, and you can barely focus… and that’s what’s scaring me.” He explained. He watched you try to gulp, and try to shrug it off.
“Yeah, maybe I have lost some sleep and dropped a few pounds… its difficult running after you, you know.” You tried to joke, but looking back at him, it was clear he was not in the joking mood. He was genuinely concerned… scared.
“Promise me something.” He demanded at you. “Promise me that you’ll stop me if you need to stop.” He asked.
“I’m not gonna stop travelling-“
“That’s not what I mean.” He once again had to stop you. “I mean… if you need to rest, or you’re feeling hungry, even in the slightest, tell me. If you need to, take a few days away from travelling just to get yourself better.” He explained himself. “Because it’s that tiredness and being fatigue that’s gonna catch up to you, and it’ll be the reason you’ll get killed… and I won’t allow that.”
You watched the usually smiley, kind man be on the brink of tears in front of you, and you couldn’t really do much but grab his hand and send a smile. “Alright. I promise.”
Hope you like it! If you have any questions, please send them in!
