Coca Cola in Berlin: "One, Two, Three!"

When you can find a copy of the 1961 classic, “One Two Three”, everything will “go better with Coke” as you prepare for family fun with Billy Wilder’s comedy and story of Mr. McNamara, who runs the Coca Cola bottling plant in Berlin and is tasked to look after his Atlanta boss’ lively daughter, Scarlet. The film became a classic in more ways than one when the Wall went up overnight and production had to move to Munich (Scarlet had been sneaking into East Berlin every night to see her “card-carrying” beau, Otto Piffl), forcing the movie studio to recreate the Brandenburg Gate. A historical satire overtaken by history, “One Two Three” was criticized at first due to its timing and heartbreak of separated families and friends, but in 1985, a Berlin cinema showed the film and it rocketed to fame, an eternal hit. (It was the desire of both this author and former Quadriga editor Chris Pelzer to host an embassy-wide showing at the Marine House, but it unfortunately never happened).

The actual Coca Cola factory, formerly located at Hildburghauser Str. 224 in Lichterfelde, is under historic monument protection with its turquoise-blue mosaic stones and long ground floor windows which used to let everyone watch production and marvel at its modern efficiency. Production began originally in 1936 (at a different location) to first service Olympic Games visitors, ceased during the war years and started up again in 1948. Since 1993, the bubbly legend is manufactured in Hohenschönhausen.
