Runner Up!

On Tuesday, November 28, the Pawnee City One-Act team, coached by Laura Bloss and assistant coach Angela Luedders, competes in their District One-Act meet at Midland in Fremont. Out of eight great teams, Pawnee City earned the District Champion plaque!

Because the team placed first in districts, they performed in the Nebraska State One-Act Competition on Wednesday, December 7. They ended the season as State Runner-Up!

The play takes place in the year 1816 in New Orleans when the Yellow Fever epidemic was occurring. It’s about orphans trying to stay safe from the virus and the city, hoping to find a home. Lizzie (Emma Meints), whose mother (Logan Maloley) works for the bread lady, helps the orphans by bringing them bread. When her mother died, she joined the orphans trying to convince a politician (Gavin McHenry) to help them. By the time the politician agreed to help, it was too late. The orphans all died after Lizzie found out her father was the politician after wondering her whole life.

The Pawnee City One-Act team invites other school teams to join the Pawnee City Festival on Saturday, November 19. The teams were not placed; however, when asked, the judges placed Pawnee City second. The judges also handed out individual awards. Kennadi Benson was given the “Gender-Bender Award.” Pawnee City was awarded Best Ensemble, Best Lights and Sound, and Best Set Design. 

Two days later, on Monday, November 21, the team traveled to Fremont to visit Midland University. Most of the teams were from bigger, Class-A schools. After the performance, the team worked with the Midland play production coach for advice and new ideas. Once again, teams were not placed, but after the event, judges sent out placings, and Pawnee City was placed fifth by one judge and fourth by the other. There were ten teams in total. 

On Wednesday, November 23, the Pawnee City One-Act team performed for the school before Thanksgiving break, and on Sunday, November 27, they performed for the Pawnee City community.

The team performs at Districts on Tuesday, November 29, at Midland. GOOD LUCK!

New Actors Finding Their Way

On November 12, the One-Act team travels to Fairbury to perform Lafayette No. 1 and take home first place!

When asked how the day went Mrs. Bloss replies, “We're just doing what we always do--working out the details. We've spent months working on the big things. Now it's time for the small things that set teams apart.” She continues, “It's going great. Better than I thought. We had a rough patch, but we're out of it. It's hard to rely on younger kids for things the older team members used to do. Rebuilding takes time. My favorite scene might be our fight, I really like so many.”

Cara Pierce, who plays Hannah said, ”I think we have a lot to work on. I believe we need to work on when we enter. I think we also need to work on always acting and not just watching. I feel fairly good about this year, but I won’t compare it with other years because I was just background or I wasn’t involved.” She continues to talk about her favorite scene, “My favorite scene is a toss-up between scene 5 and scene 6. Scene 5 is the pie stealing and Hannah’s fight. Scene 6 is Hannah’s backstory/yelling at Lizzie.”

Anna Meints, who plays Moab writes, “One thing I think we need to work on is our first orphan scene since we aren’t sure when the scene before ends. Compared to the years before, we aren’t that experienced, but we aren’t doing badly. My favorite scene is probably the very first one when we are all waking Lizzie up from her sleep. Altogether, considering how most of us have never done something like this before, we are doing really well!”

The Pawnee City Team has performed in the Pioneer Conference at Tri-County, the PC One-Act Festival, the One-Act Clash at Midland, the One-Act Matinee and the Public Performance, since Fairbury.

They will be performing again on November 29, at Midland for districts.

A Busy Season

The Pawnee City One-Act team is off to a busy and successful start!  Their first competition was on November 12 in York.  Several acting awards were handed out to the following Pawnee City actors: Alyssa Pierce, Larissa Tegtmeier, Ashlynn Hartman, Sierra de Koning, Stella Hunzeker, Keegan Vetrovsky, Kian Schultze, and Gavin McHenry. Stella earned Best Overall Lead Actress as well.

On November 13, they traveled to Fairbury. Individual Acting Awards that day were Stella Hunzeker, Larissa Tegtmeier, Alyssa Pierce, Kian Schultze, and Keegan Vetrovsky. Pawnee City received Runner-Up at Fairbury.

Pawnee City hosted the Pioneer Conference competition on November 17 and earned the Runner-Up trophy. Individual Acting Awards are as follows: Sierra de Koning, Stella Hunzeker, Larissa Tegtmeier, Keegan Vetrovsky, Gavin McHenry, Kian Schultze, Alyssa Pierce, and Ashlynn Hartman. Larissa was also awarded Best Female Actress. Coach Laura Bloss commented on the meet, “It was one of the most competitive conference meets in recent memory as four schools will meet again on November 30 for the C2-1 District at LCC.” 

Pawnee City hosted their One-Act Festival on November 20. Individual Acting Awards are as follows:  Kian Schultze, Keegan Vetrovsky, Stella Hunzeker, Larissa Tegtmeier, Alyssa Pierce, Sierra de Koning, and Gavin McHenry. Larissa also received Best Supporting Actress.

As Mrs. Bloss said, our team will be competing at Districts on Tuesday, November 30, at Nebraska City Lourdes. They will be on stage at 10:30 a.m., trying to earn first place to get them to State.
