I read this book in the fall of 2012. This book is set in a call center in India. It delves into the lives of several young Indians all of which are transitioning in and out of different role in their lives.
In December of the same year a young Indian student was brutally raped. She had been attacked on a moving bus by five men, one a juvenile. One of the beasts thwarted an iron rod up her vagina leading to massive internal injuries. She succumb to her injuries about ten days after the attack.
This young woman was the hope of her impoverished family. A path out of poverty. Along with her studies in physiotherapy she was also a part-time employee at a call center. She worked for an unnamed Canadian bank.
Every time I see this book on my bookshelf I am always reminded of this young girl- the media had given her the pseudonym of Nirbhaya (Sanskrit origin meaning ‘fearless’). India’s media is prohibited by law from disclosing the identity of any (sexual) assault survivor.
She had a life, she had dreams and she had ambition. It’s the story of so many young woman struggling to beat the glass ceiling; beat the traditional- dare I say stereotypical- roles of a woman in a patriarchal society. When I see this book I think of her- working at a call centre and going to school to give her family access to a better life. How these characters spoke and interacted lent insight into how Nirbhaya may have been.
We have all spoken to a representative of a company with call centres abroad. Be mindful that they are people too. With dreams and hope just like us: to give ourselves and our family a better future. Be kind.
