So, considering the recent post "Give me a character," and the subsequent posts, here's the character: Onimi. And be honest, don't hold back just because I love that character.

Only you could ask me about Onimi of all people, lol :)

favourite episode/etc: damn, it’s been so long since I read NJO so I may get this wrong... the one when he scares Nen Yim and she realizes his disguise as a Shaper; and I generally liked his appearances as a jester on Shimrra’s court

I’ve been thinking more about the Onimi problem lately, and I realized: There’s no way Onimi could have won at the end of The Unifying Force even if he had killed Jacen. I know I’ve gone into this several times before, but this time, I’m sure I got this down pat.

Let me elaborate. Let’s say Onimi manages to kill every one of the Solos aboard his ship, and Nom Anor for good measure. What happens next?

Well, Mara, who’s over in the Millennium Falcon with Tahiri, Kenth Hamner, Cakhmaim, Meewalh, and a dying Luke will sense all of the Solos’ deaths. And being a cold calculating individual, as Mara is someone I imagine to be brutally efficient in whatever ways she achieves through her revenge, she first lets Jag and their unnamed supporting pilot know that the Solos are all dead. She then proceeds to let the rest of the Galactic Alliance fleet know about this, too, and from there, Onimi gets swarmed.

Now what his protective, hardened spacecraft? Those have their limits; it was stated twice in The Unifying Force that the Supreme Overlord’s spacecraft is hardened and is similar - note, similar - to the apparently-invulnerable dome of the Well of the World Brain, but being similar could mean that Onimi’s escape vessel wouldn’t be able to withstand a near-constant barrage of high-powered lasers, concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, you name them,, swarming his poor fucking ship.

As well, as stated in The Unifying Force, Warmaster Nas Choka believed in the invincibility of the Supreme Overlord such that he believed that if the Yuuzhan Vong were to fail, Shimrra would be the last to die. And when he sees the escape vessel rising from Coruscant with the Millennium Falcon and two starfighters on its tail, he doesn’t help because he believes in the Supreme Overlord’s invincibility. Of course, Choka would help Onimi if expressly told; hell, Onimi could just tell him via villip transmission that he’s relaying Shimrra’s orders. So that would probably lead Onimi to flee from the destructive power of a Mara-piloted Falcon and two starfighters, one piloted by a man (Jag) who’s as vengeful, if not more so, than Mara; sure, Yuuzhan Vong forces would engage the Falcon and the starfighters, but unless Onimi says otherwise, he’s pretty much on his own. And since he’ll be in the middle of fleeing for his life, he won’t have an opportunity to ask Choka for help.

And then there’s the fucking yammosk jammers, as introduced in Star by Star (fuck you, Troy Denning). All of the above points that I just mentioned would have been negated if it weren’t for these fucking jammers; again, fuck you, Denning. You know why? Because Onimi’s powers are based on yammosk DNA, and if he accidentally flies into a field of space where a yammosk jammer is running, his powers will be nullified. Hell, he wouldn’t even sense it coming anymore than any other Force-user would be able to sense an ysalamiri field coming for him/her, so if he’s fleeing, he could just fly into a yammosk-jamming field and his powers will go, leaving him utterly defenseless to at least three ships, if not an entire enemy fleet. Again, that enemy fleet could be occupied by the Yuuzhan Vong, but the Vong won’t be fighting so hard with their belief in the Supreme Overlord’s invincibility, and Onimi still wouldn’t be able to contact Choka because he’ll be too busy getting thrown about as projectiles are striking against his ship, eroding his defenses with large blasts of lasers, torps, and missiles. And I believe that the escape ship wouldn’t have been as sturdy as the Well of the World Brain because the latter was created by the ingestion of the metallic components of the Senate Rotunda, which were said to withstand a planetbuster, and it thus contributed to the Well’s own invincibility. The escape ship, on the other hand, was created by the Yuuzhan Vong’s own resources for all we know, and it could have material that would have been a little too inferior to stand up to a planetbuster.

And then there’s Onimi’s tactical idiocy; he’s obviously no Grand Admiral Thrawn. Why do I say that? Because earlier in the novel, during the scene where the Shamed Ones foil the Yuuzhan Vong elite’s Galactic Alliance sacrifice, we see that Onimi is there, disguised as a warrior, and he doesn’t do anything! The closest we could ever think to what he would have done was control the warriors who were fighting the Shamed Ones, but why didn’t he just take control of the Shamed Ones and make them kill themselves? It would have been so much easier, efficient, and tactically sound; and he could have had Shimrra later say that it was the will of the gods who deigned that the Shamed Ones kill themselves, as Yun’o didn’t want their GA feast spoiled. This would have made atheistic Nom Anor actually doubt his own disbelief, and would have prompted (relative) realist Nas Choka to have the faith to attack Mon Calamari earlier than he ultimately did. Most importantly, this would have bolstered faith in Shimrra as a leader and as a bridge to the gods! And don’t tell me Onimi didn’t think to kill the Shamed Ones because he didn’t think about what the positive consequences would be; he’s not one who thinks all that well anyway in spite of his inventive rhymes, so wouldn’t he make a maneuver that would have been as desperate as it would have been effective?

In conclusion, I think this is a great flaw in the conclusion to The Unifying Force; it ruins the finality of Onimi’s demise and the victory over the Yuuzhan Vong. The vagueness of Onimi’s threat brought him down as a villain, though not so much as a character, in my eyes and it brought less credibility to me that Jacen had to have achieved oneness with the Force to defeat Onimi.

You know how in other films or novels, like the original SW film for example, where the threats were exact, precise, and you knew what was at stake and why our heroes should succeed? Like if Luke hadn’t blown up the Death Star, Yavin 4 would have been destroyed, and that might as well have been the end of the Rebellion. Here, however, Jacen could have been killed, and Mara would have come in as backup. It just shows not so much a lack of thought on James Luceno’s part so much as it was an incompleteness; as I read through it, I noticed a few grammatical and logical mistakes in that climax to TUF that indicated that both Luceno and the editors reading it were so excited at what was happening that they forgot to take a step back and elucidate just how exactly Onimi could have served as an effective threat.

Oh, and also: No, I don’t consider Onimi being a threat by turning into a ghost to be plausible in spite of the likes of Exar Kun.
