Illustrations for OOH CHIC 2025 - Ultramarine Edition

Had the pleasure in participating in this year's OOH CHIC Zine! An annual event dedicated to OCs and fashion ^_^

From research to ideation down to the construction and refinement in itself, it was an utter blast to be apart of this event and I'm excited to finally share it with you all!

And without further ado, lets begin:

[PROCESS UNDERCUT]

There were only two requirements in OOH CHIC:

[1] Must be original characters [2] Must highlight that year's chosen colour

And it being my first time in the zine I wanted to be AMBITIOUS! Taking this opportunity see how much I can experiment with my process.

And with it I took a lot of preliminary preparation, establishing the themes/motifs I'm aiming for and translating that into clothing (and later the compositions themselves. I chose Usagi and Arisu specifically for this prompt as blue is a overlapping colour that their outfits share and their affiliations with death - hence the gothic lolita style of fashion.

This was also the first time using 3D models as a direct reference.

While the RIGHT PIECE could have existed as a standalone piece, because of the angle it was difficult to showcase the outfits. For this the LEFT PIECE is important in doing just that.

FUNFACT- Alternatively there was going to be more surrounding captions but was later scrapped as the detail + font choice clashed too much with the intricate background (important when balancing details with the RIGHT PIECE)

Notes on the RIGHT PIECE... I learned the hard way Medibang lies when they said their layer limit is 1025... Warning: it will start to BUFFER even when your layer count reaches the triple digits.

Nowadays for larger pieces I create a new copy with each milestone. This allows me to merge layers and treating older ones like save slots. I can merge layers fearlessly without the worry of never being able to reverse mistakes.

Overall one of my most ambitious projects to ever partake in - working on it for the past 5 months and finally.... FINALLY being able to show for it has opened my eyes to try for even greater limits!
