❝ i’ve looked close enough and i see you for what you are. ❞
ha ha. discomfort settles into her bones as amelia looks at her. she fights the urge to squirm, sinking deep into her seat. she curls up, wishes she could shrink herself to a size of a pea, and lies there nervously with her fist covering her mouth and a nail between her teeth, chewing it. she watches amelia, plastering a weak smile across her cheeks. even now she can feel it wobble, and keeps her hand up to hide the way her mouth starts to arch itself. she thinks if she speaks then all that she’s been keeping in will come spilling out, and she won’t be able to stop. ( she doesn’t want to cry now! )
so she stares, nerves mounting up, her eyes welling as hot tears prick at their corners. eventually she loses her cool enough to break eye contact, turning away to let out a shaky breath. the lump in her throat shifts. face creasing. ( smile, just smile! ). but she can’t. her lip wavers, puckers, and she shoves the bases of her palms into her eyes and rubs furiously at them.
“ shit. ” she’s sadder than she lets on. ( too soft. lonely. she feels so lonely. ) “ shit. sorry. i don’t know where that came from. ” a weak laugh escapes her, arms folded tight across her chest as she glimpses amelia from beneath her lashes, out the corner of her eye. how can she say it’s because she’s fallen out of love? she no longer wears her wedding ring. only puts it on when she feels guilty, when she’s thinking about her wife instead of who is normally on her mind these days: amelia. “ guess we’ve known each other long enough, huh. you should know me by now. ”
