Things I Learned From the Junior Novel: EXCERPT THIRTEEN

--SMASH!--into another part of the castle. “AAAAHHH!” they screamed. 

Riding the skate, the Trolls smashed through a lamp, a chandelier, a china cabinet, and a marble bust of King Gristle until they finally landed in a heap in the kitchen. 

Poppy stood up and shook off the rough landing. She noticed that the locket had opened in the crash. “Creek!” she cried. “We’ll have you out of there in a second!” 

The Trolls rushed to the locket--only to find that it was empty! That could only mean--

“No,” Poppy said. “He can’t be gone.” 

“I’m sorry,” Branch said, “We’re too late.” 

Poppy’s eyes filled with tears. Without even thinking, Branch reached out to hug her.
