you’ve been very strong your whole life. the war i finally won / not accepting. / @thawedpatriot
there’s a river of pain that runs through his bloodstream, and he supposes that there is something to do with that when it comes to everything he’s experienced over his lifetime. he befriended misery, loneliness, emptiness, when he was a young child. he can’t quite recall when he got his first scar (emotional or physical? he can’t say for the life of him). they come in brief flashes of memories every so often, a reminder of what he’s done, what he’s gotten in return, and what he has now. and now, perhaps, is the happiest he’s been in a long, long, time, and he clings onto it in the hopes it’ll carry on with him for the rest of his life. maybe the world will lighten the load on his shoulders, allow him to rest now without having to be the atlas of this universe.
“ yeah, well–– ” words cut off there as he struggles to find the right way to respond to steve’s statement. he knows the man doesn’t compliment without meaning it, but a part of him has grown used to fancy terms and useless compliments a while ago. “ –– thanks. i guess. ” he suppresses a wince. he’s bad at this. responding genuinely to something else so genuine.
